Dirty HDD - Windows 7 won't let me write to exFAT drive anymore

DrezDrez Registered User regular
So I have three external HDDs - all formatted in exFAT - none of which Windows 7 will write to any longer. I can fully access them in Mac OS, but I have a few PC applications that I really like in Windows that I want to use with these HDDs.

Will running chkdsk screw them up?
Any ideas what I can do?

This is not a HDD failure, which is what was recommended last time I had this issue (when I only had one such HDD). This is most likely because I improperly ejected the drive. I believe Windows 7 marks an exFAT drive "dirty" when this happens, or at least that is one possible symptom of my pre-ejectulate hubris.

Any ideas? :(

If not, anyone know any free Mac programs like IrfanView that I can resize and rotate photos in bulk? And also one that acts like Image Explorer or whatever it's called so I can quickly whip through full-sized photos using the cursor/arrow keys? Mac sucks for this. I have Photoshop and Lightroom but I'm not a fan of their image explorers, either.

Probably not. Best to back up the data from an OS that can access it before doing so.

I've not used it myself but a lot of people swear by it.

Running chkdsk is the only way to clear the dirty bit off the drive unless you feel comfortable editing the drive with a hexeditor, your problem here is you can end up losing otherwise readable data while running chkdsk just because of the way it work. It's not designed to repair the disk so much as it is to just make it usable again by removing "bad" data.

Back up your ext hdds to your mac then reformat them or run chkdsk :/
