Should I take this to a doctor (Heart Rate Up while doing nothing)
Over the past few weeks I have noticed that my heart will randomly being beating faster, when I am sitting down on the 'puter or doing homework, etc. I am 17, eat properly, regularly exercise about 3-4 times a week and am in decent shape.
Sometimes my heart just decides to increase its pace, and I feel like doing some exercise. Usually I just plop on the floor and do some floor stuff (situps/push ups/ etc) and it seems to go away.
This seems to happen to me as well sometimes, and it's always freaked me out. Usually, I just take a few deep breaths and that makes my heart get back to normal, but I've wondered if it was ever something to worry about, too. :-\
I tried doing some internet research into it, and of course came up with the life threatening your heart has a weird beat thing, and while reading the symptoms I noticed that occasionally I too get weird chest pains for no reason (infrequent).
But this got me thinking, would my heart just suddenly change?
Go to a doctor ASAP. Don't screw around with something as serious as your heart. Why would it suddenly change? I have no idea, there's a myriad of possible reasons. Whatever the case is, it's better to let the doctor have a look at you than to take your chances.
My dad starting having odd things like that happen with his heart. The doctor told him to cut out caffeine. He was not a happy guy until his body adjusted, but it solved the problem.
Don't fuck around with self diagnosing heart problems. Go see a doctor.
This happened to me recently, but I'm on antibiotics and steroids to get rid of an infection I have right now, so that was the reason for mine.
Anyway, I did go get checked out when I noticed it was happening, and was told that - as long as it isn't something serious or life-threatening - splashing cold water on your face can slow down your heart rate.
But yeah, you should definitely go get checked out. Hopefully it's something simple like that.
Could be a number of things: anxiety attack, torn heart valve, ardrenal gland problem. Or it could be caffeine other meds, etc. Were you looking at pron when your heart rate went up?O_o
Do you think certain things when you notice it beating faster or it just does it on it's own? Initally I would say stress and possibly latent panic disorder, but I don't know what goes on in your normal life.
But this is your ticker so you should REALLY go to a doctor and have it looked at.
My doctor told me that while 90% of all irregular heartbeats are benign, it's always best to get it looked at by a cardiologist, just to safe. It can never hurt, and then if it is nothing, you'll at least have the peace of mind knowing that it is safe.
So, first and foremost, see a doctor.
But to ease your mind: If your not fainting or having dizzy spells, you're probably ok. Irregular heartbeats are fairly common, as the heart is not perfect, and even having the heart skip beats or beat extra hard for one beat (I get these... In truth, it's not beating extra hard for that one beat, but rather the top ventricle is beating heavier than the bottom ventricle... It's benign, but irritating, because it gives me a flutter and scared the crap out of me the first time it happened).
But, as always, don't mess around with the heart, brain or lungs. If anything is ever even remotely possibly wrong with these areas, then you get it checked out by a doctor without question. Always better to be safe than sorry.

I know this has already been asked, but are you feeling stressed?
Also, this could be an indication of high blood pressure as well. What is your normal diet? How much do you weigh, and how much exercise do you normally get? This kind of problem could be telling you that your heart is working too hard, in which case you would have high blood pressure. The same thing happened to my dad, and this is what turned out happening.
Either way, It'd be a good idea to go see a doctor.
The most likely causes of increased heart rate are dehydration, fever, and lower neck misalignment. If it seems random then it could also be stress-related. (You could be thinking about stressful things while your heart rate is increasing).
I had the same thing about a year ago and went to my Chiropractor and he said that it was because my neck was out of place. He adjusted it and it went away and hasn't come back since.
So, just drink more water and relax, see if it goes away, and if doesn't then go to a Chiropractor or doctor.

Fix't
I think you need to be a little more skeptical of your chiropractor's claims. Find me some cardiologists who say a common cause of increased heart rate is 'lower neck misalignment'...

Yeah, I was skeptical too, but it worked. I had random increased heart rate for almost a year and a half and it's been a year since that one adjustment and I haven't had it since.
So, it's worth a try for the op because it worked for me. Or at least for him to know about the option.
A lot of good has already been said. There are many reasons why it's possible to have tachycardia (fast heartbeat) unexpectedly. Making sure that you're hydrated, that you're well overall, and that you're calm are the best ways to rule out the most benign causes for this symptom. Sometimes, even just thinking about your heart rate will accelerate it, so it's fairly difficult to be certain that these are the reasons.
I would be on the fence about recommending that you schedule a visit with your primary doctor, except that you mentioned that sometimes you also feel random chest pains. That's a fairly vague complaint, as far as they go, and it's entirely possible that both of your symptoms are benign and unrelated, but I feel that I would be remiss if I just assumed that they were. What may be a better option would be to call a telenurse, if there are any hospitals in your county with that sort of program, or just to ask the doctor's office if they do telephone consults. If they don't, then a primary care office visit wouldn't be a bad idea. If you haven't yet had your annual physical, this is a good reason to get one.

You should ask your chiropractor what physiological mechanisms affect heart rate, and follow up by asking which of these are altered by "lower neck misalignment", and why. I'd be interested to hear the answer and read any studies behind this claim. Actually, I'd be more interested to know in which population this claim is made (age, gender, comorbidities).
Set up a doctor appointment for Friday, thanks for the advice . I may be getting a little heart crazy because of a recent death in my family, but I guess there is no such thing as too safe.

Once again, the doctors appointment is definitely the best way to go, BUT... Could this be a cause of stress for you? If someone in your family died of heart related problems, you may be psychologically worrying about your heart, which can't be helping matters.
Eh, go to the doctors and get an ECG, tell them about it. I suspect it has something to do with caffeine. Are you taking any vitamins or supplements? Does this happen at any particular part of the day?
Regardless I would go to the doctors and check it out. You are right at the age that some of these congenital heart problems start to emerge. You dont want to fuck around with that.

Doctor, now.
