I'm surprised western union is still in business when their primary clients seem to be criminals committing fraud.

A lot of the low income folks when I worked at Dish Network paid via Western Union.

I didn't know you could pay bills through Western Union, that's weird. Their cut is so huge, it's a terrible idea.

Like many people that prey on the poor, minorities or just those with minimal means it is awful.

The US Dollar is valid for all debts, both public and private.

    Companies have to accept cash.

You could legitimately walk into your electric company's office tomorrow and hand them your bill with cash and they'd have to take it.

Except the point is that most poor people can't do that.

The electric company's hours are 9:00 to 5:00 and they have a shift from 7a-7p. They have to pay some other way, and they can't get a bank account because of bad credit.

Actually, the place I'm working at is one of the few things someone with no credit can use to pay bills and what-not online.

A lot have deposit slots now.

I have never heard of getting a bank or CU account being difficult because of poor credit. Most banks I've ever heard of or used don't even do a credit check other than to establish identity.

I walked into Wells Fargo to open a checking account so I could do a cash advance from my debit card because I forgot the new pin on my actual bank account. It took all of 8 minutes.

I hear a lot of people say this, but I've never witnessed it. I know bank accounts can get "expensive" with fees, but there are solutions to that as well.

Going to western union to send a payment to a company? You're already paying the bank's $15 account fee a month right there if you've got 3 bills.

People who tend to use stuff like WU for bills are the same folks who can't get an account or aren't paying the whole bill or if they don't do the math right they get an overdraft fee which compounds. On top of a bit of lack of knowledge or time to use a normal bank.

And you were worried about getting up-charged.

    I knew it was leaking coolant, which is why I went to the dealership and paid their oil change price, which comes with free diagnosis. I was just hoping for a loose hose clamp or something ;_;

That drive belt was a total upsell though, motherfuckers. I told them no, I will replace it after it snaps on the highway and I get stranded. I also said no to the oil leak fix because that was nearly a thousand dollars and over the past 2 years it has lost all of 8 oz of oil. At that rate, just fill it back up when I get an oil change, fk the environment.

a big part of my job is western union. i started at the service desk where i'd do a couple dozen of those transactions per day but now i supervise the people who do that and get called over exclusively for the 'problem' customers. some people are obviously scamming, ie structuring multiple transactions such that they're not required to present ID. in other cases, they're being scammed unwittingly- someone will tell them their grandson is in jail and this functions as the bail money, or w-e. i have to ask probing questions in a non-patronizing way in order to avoid them being scammed.

WU is bound by regulatory actions and so they are very strict on their agents. messing up a WU is one of the few insta-fire offenses at my jerb. i've had to go to multiple anti-money laundering classes and learn about catching scams, protecting customer data etc. it's very tightly enforced.

but the vast majority of transactions are legit. people either send money to a friend or relative in the US who's in trouble (and doesn't have a bank account or else can't wait for processing time), or they send money internationally to family back home. some people use it to pay bills- i have a lot of affluent looking customers who pay their mortgage this way, presumably because they're too disorganized or lazy to sit down and write out a check or w-e (or they're too tech-illiterate to figure out an online method). i also have a lot of people use WU to add funds to the account of a loved one in prison so they can shop at the commissary.

You don't want to go for the ones with the lowest price. There are very real differences in capabilities, if you want a gaming machine you probably don't want to spend $150 on a cheapo.

Figure out your budget, and either get a preassembled computer in that range (with good ratings) or look at the list here. They'll give you a decent idea of what you should look at for your price range.
