It was a nice way to casually talk about games that wouldn't necessarily support their own thread. Or talk about games without necessarily trying to start an entire big conversation about them.
I mean, the Nintendo thread was specifically about the company. Half the time we weren't even talking about actual games, specifically, but, like, Amiibo, or hardware rumors, or people associated with the company. Also, I thought that thread was the answer to the various individual series threads we had floating around, like the Zelda and Pokemon threads which mostly died when the Nintendo thread opened.

Was those threads dying a good thing?

Yeah, if three megathreads is a problem, I fail to see the logic that a half-dozen microthreads for specific series is better.
Edit: And to be clear, I'm not arguing or complaining, just trying to understand.
Smaller, non-recursive threads attract a wider variety of posters and participation. Large catchall megathreads develop microcommunities that can be hard for someone without a vested interest to break into.
If I bought a new Cooking Mama game and wanted to rap about it, and the existing Nintendo thread community is having a die hard debate about Reggies new underpants, we ain't gonna talk about cooking mama. And if I make a new thread, I'm gonna get pointed right back at the megathread.

I'll call her right now and tell her she needs to step up her game.
But three iterations of a giant, nebulous, amorphous, catchall topic bobbing around is kind of a lot.
Do you want Nyarlathoteps? Because that's how you get Nyarlathoteps.
As someone who posts almost exclusively in SE++, it was a useful way to connect with people I already spent time talking to

When we're up to our tits in Nyarlathoteps, I am NOT dealing with a bunch of, 'abloo abloo, please bonK, save us from The Crawling Chaos.'
Nyancathoteps
I think it made things better in G&T.
Okay, but where should we be talking about random, short-term discussion?
Like, not every Nintendo game or piece of news is big or popular enough to support a solo thread.
