    Apparently its from a hazerdous materials shipping company, believed to be accidental right now.

    7 confirmed dead so far. Reports from AP that firefighters aren't bothering to put out flames and are just trying to get people away from the 10km radius of collapse from the shockwave.

    Also, any jokes I make are in no way meant to diminish the tragedy of this event. I literally do not know how to process an event that has injured thousands, beyond treating it the same way I treat anything--with levity. I tend to have to bite my tongue at funerals a lot.

    The thing that really drives home the size and impact of that explosion is the time lapse between the explosion and then seconds later the shockwave arriving, clearly with enough force and energy to scare the pants off the people filming it. How big must it have been, and how concussive, to still be pushing out that much force that far away after so much energy should have escaped and dissipated as the radius expands?

    Well, "confirmed" is the operative word. Who knows how easy it is for rescue crews to even reach most of the affected areas.

    It sounds like between the population density and the location of the explosion (relatively near residential districts) the end number is gonna be pretty high. Though that's coming from local comment sections being translated by other comment sections so who the fuck knows.

    wow this makes the SE fireworks explosion in enschede (holland) look like a firecracker.

    I wonder what tonnage of conventional bombs would be required to do that.

    edit: the second explosion has been estimated at 21 tons TNT.

    that's the kind of explosion you associate with like, the villain in a movie starting an international incident, or godzilla rising from the seas. you forget that something like that can be real.
