An unbelievable massive explosion just occured in Tianjin city, just south of Beijing:

A lot of videos of it can be seen here:

Linkified massive gif

Explosion believed to be a explosives materials shipment at the harbor. Not known if accidental or deliberate.

Thousands confirmed injured.

Molten variables hiss and roar. On my mind-forge, I hammer them into the greatsword Epistemology. Many are my foes this night.

Damn, it's like the explosion that happened in Texas a few years back, maybe even bigger.

That GIF is eerily reminiscent of the Terminator nuke scene.

Apparently its from a hazerdous materials shipping company, believed to be accidental right now.

7 confirmed dead so far. Reports from AP that firefighters aren't bothering to put out flames and are just trying to get people away from the 10km radius of collapse from the shockwave.

Supposedly the two explosions caused the equivalent of a category 2 and category 3 earthquake. I can't even get my mind around that amount of force.

    What were they transporting?

Pfft, Doom would never allow himself to be transported in that way. A Doombot, on the other hand, I could see exploding like that.

    They were transporting the Tesseract.

Also, any jokes I make are in no way meant to diminish the tragedy of this event. I literally do not know how to process an event that has injured thousands, beyond treating it the same way I treat anything--with levity. I tend to have to bite my tongue at funerals a lot.

The thing that really drives home the size and impact of that explosion is the time lapse between the explosion and then seconds later the shockwave arriving, clearly with enough force and energy to scare the pants off the people filming it. How big must it have been, and how concussive, to still be pushing out that much force that far away after so much energy should have escaped and dissipated as the radius expands?

It's really hard to believe those videos as a real thing that happened and not an impressive special effect from a movie. Things that intense aren't supposed to happen in the real world!

I wonder how much information we'll get about this.

Over here we eventually get detailed incident reports that tell how these disasters happen from the CSB.

It's thousands confirmed INJURED right now, not dead

I almost can't believe "only" 7 people are confirmed dead. That explosion looked like it encompasses several building blocks.

Friend of mine used to live in that city for 2 years. So far, no one his family knew has been hurt. Lots of them saw/felt it, though...

Well, "confirmed" is the operative word. Who knows how easy it is for rescue crews to even reach most of the affected areas.

It sounds like between the population density and the location of the explosion (relatively near residential districts) the end number is gonna be pretty high. Though that's coming from local comment sections being translated by other comment sections so who the fuck knows.

wow this makes the SE fireworks explosion in enschede (holland) look like a firecracker.

I wonder what tonnage of conventional bombs would be required to do that.

edit: the second explosion has been estimated at 21 tons TNT.

I was in China literally two days ago. I have friends still there and I'm worried one of them may be in Tianjin right now.

It's also freaking me out cause after living there for two months I understand the kind of population density of those cities and honestly, a lot of people are likely dead.

    It's really really bad.

Also, here are some of the possible economic ramifications of this:
But the economic implications may loom large as well:
Port of Tianjin is one of the largest ports in the world (top-10, arguably; depending on your metric)
it is massively damaged and won't be operating for quite a while (!); certainly well below capacity for months
cargo currently in port will have to be written off; cargo scheduled to leave the port ... forget about receiving it for a while; other ports in China will be able to deal with some priority cargo (containers, especially), but cannot handle all the cargo that was supposed to be shipped there (Tianjin preferentially handled non-container cargo, it was "only" the 9th largest container port in the world, but the 4th in tonnage)
there will likely be specific product bottlenecks, where other ports wont be able to pick up the slack due to lack of specialized facilities for bulk cargo (apparently coke, coal, oil, grain, fertilizer (!), chemicals, lubricants, ...; not all of these, but some)

that explosion is fucking terrifying because you don't believe that a random explosion in a city can just look like that

that's the kind of explosion you associate with like, the villain in a movie starting an international incident, or godzilla rising from the seas. you forget that something like that can be real.

That looks like a fictional nuke aftermath with the building in the back, just.... wow. That is crazy. How close was that?
