You're thirsty and you see a water cooler. You grab one of the styrofoam cups next to machine and hold it under the nozzle, licking your parched lips in anticipation of that cool, refreshing water. But before you can fill your cup you must make a very important decision.

Similar for me, but the other way around. I hold the cup with my palm, thumb, and last 2 fingers, and pull the lever down with my index finger .

Lifting is superior because you usually can lift it up and then let it go and it will keep running. But if you press it down then you're stuck holding it until you've got enough.

I push it down because I'm always afraid if I flip it up I'll somehow overfill my drink by not flipping it back down in time.

Pushing it down allows me to apply exactly as much water as I want.
