No prize support for official PAX tournaments?

drastickdrastick Registered User regular
At PAX Prime I entered and managed to win one of the PC tournaments. I know in the past there was formal prize support for these tournaments, but this time it appears to be not the case. (short of a small generic medal that didn't even have the game title engraved on it) Does anyone know if this is a PC only phenomenon, or something more widespread?

Instead of the medal, I think it would be cool if tournament winners received gold/foil covered "Champion's badges" for next year's PAX. This would be a simple prize that any attendee would want, and would allow for a full weekend of subtle auto-bragging come next year. It would also spark greater interest in the tournaments and make them a more notable part of PAX. (especially in games that aren't typically "competitive" or "eSports")

that's pretty typical of pax run tourneys. they're supposed to be just for fun.

It's just a bit surprising, especially since there was support back when the event was much smaller (and surely less profitable).

I prefer it to just be bragging rights personally, I agree with the fact it's supposed to just be for fun.

Pretty sure any "real" prizes ever given out for contests or tournaments are from sponsored tournaments, not official PAX stuff. Maybe back when PAX was small they had to rely more heavily on sponsored stuff, so that's why there were bigger sponsored prizes? That's just conjecture on my part though as I only started going in 2011.

I haven't been to many PAX tournaments, but the You Don't Know Jack tournament two years ago (1 year ago? It blurs together) just had the little PAX medal for the winner. My boyfriend and I were also given medals just for doing pipe cleaner stuff in the Queue Monday morning. Mine was bronze and just said "You Tried" but his at least said "Most Entertained" which was technically pertinent to what we "competed" in (against each other).

bit o trivia for ya, "You Tried" is among the rarest PAX medals. There are only a few each PAX, and sometimes not all of them are awarded. Also, there are no gold/sliver PAX medals of any kind. They are each crafted of the same materials.

Are sure this is right? I have medals from South/East that are made from different materials.

I think he means all medals from a singular PAX are the same material.

Sorry for the potato quality but I have 3 medals from East 2015 that are made out of 3 different materials: http://i.imgur.com/MT6Iweg.jpg

Yeah I'm not so sure about the "only one metal" thing either. I don't have a picture but the one my boyfriend got is very clearly a gold or brass color (though I'm assuming not actually gold :P) while the one I got is more of a bronze or copper. And they both have the same logo so it's not like one is being recycled from another branch.

Most medals are just medals. But there are a few departments (like Console Tourney) that have "Gold" "Silver" and "Bronze" medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. The text on the back of a medal should help identify what it was for.
