I've never understood why diesel and regular petrol pumps don't have different nozzles. I guess it's slightly cheaper for car and petrol station manufacturers to just have one standard nozzle for both types.

At this particular service station they are different bowsers. I've just been filling up my jerrycan for my lawn machinery a lot recently and habit took over, I guess.

Well, I put regular fuel in a diesel car this afternoon.
That's a fuckup by any standard, but I'm a fourth generation mechanic, and a diesel technician to be specific...
How do you expect to ride shiny and chrome if you do things like that?

It's about 70% 98 octane petrol, and 30% BPs 'Ultimate' diesel. So, useless for anything other than starting fires. If it were only 5% diesel I'd just use it in my lawn machinery.

Yeah but it's a bit easier to burn civilization on the West Coast. Fire can rage in Australia and so long as it's not touching the coast the populace is mostly safe.

No, they are actually different. They diesel nozzle is larger than the gas nozzle. I know this because I was tired one night after a long drive and I spent 5 minutes trying to fit a diesel nozzle in my gas vehicle.
Doesn't stop you from sticking a gas nozzle in diesel tank, though.

Depends how much Diesel you've put in the tank, if it's just a little bit you can probably run just fine and not worry.
If you add like half a tank worth then the best idea would to call a tow truck, get it towed to a shop and they detach the fuel tank and drain/clean it out.
@Straightzi some things, like DeIce trucks, can run on both diesel and Jet A
Jet A is basically kerosene with some additives. Just about any older diesel engine will run pretty happily on it. More modern, higher-speed diesels with newer technology bolted onto them might not like it, though.

You can do what I did, which is take the fuel line that goes from the in-tank fuel pump up to the engine bay and disconnect it in the engine bay. Then you pop a few feet of larger hose over the end of it and direct that down into a fuel container. Turn the ignition to ON (not START), and the in-tank pump should turn on. It will drain all the fuel out of the tank down as far as the pump can pick it up from (there will be very little left in the bottom of the tank, maybe a quart or two). When fuel stops coming out of the hose, turn the ignition back off (you need to watch and be ready, running the fuel pump in an empty tank can overheat it and burn it out, they are lubricated and cooled by the fuel flowing through them). Then you just reconnect the line, double check to make sure it's on and secure, then fill the fuel tank up with the correct fuel for your vehicle. The small amount of the wrong fuel remaining in the tank will disperse throughout all the good fuel now filling the tank and won't have any ill-effect on your car.
If your car is like ours and when you turn the ignition switch to ON, after a second or two it realises the engine is not running and stops the in tank pump, just turn the switch back off and then ON again, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over... I filled up a 20 litre (~5.3 US gallons) jerrycan about 50mL at a time last night.
Unfortunately, many people let their dogs go in other people's lawns
My neighbor blamed my brother that his dogs were going on his lawn not the feral cat problem we had

About an hour once we sourced some hose. Regular garden hose has too small an i.d., so my sister drove Amy to the hardware store and she bought a bunch of different sizes of hose to be sure that one of them would work.
My sister's (now) husband managed to put diesel in her petrol Volvo years ago. With the diesel nozzle being bigger than the petrol one and the narrow filler neck on an 850, we're still not sure how he managed it. My sister was mostly irritated that she had to keep explaining that it she didn't do it, it was the sheepish looking bloke standing next to her.
One of the engineers at my old company borrowed the company pickup truck (gasoline operated) for a weekend and refilled it with diesel. They had to basically rebuild the entire engine.
