Aggressive Oil Leak

I recently noticed my Volkswagen bus ('71) on my relatively low mile engine has recently started leaking oil very aggressively. It's almost gone through a quart in a week's time.

Now, the engine is fairly new, maybe 2,000-3,000 miles on it.

No I haven't done the valves since the initial adjustment; that's the first thing on my to do list after this crazy semester at school is done.

I do have some pictures of where it is leaking, though they are a bit blurry. I'm at the back of the bus looking forward.

I don't know what that disk thing is on the bottom of the engine (Standard air cooled 1600cc).

I'd rather not take this to the mechanic - but I will if I have to. I just don't know where to start. One of these days I'm going to take an automotive class.

Current oil weight: 10W-40.

I suggest you hoof it on over to the aircooled forums on vwvortex. I've gotten awesome write- ups on all my VW maintenance oddities from there. Well, there and the passat forums, but those won't help you.
