How does the game change when you get a large ship?

Will mission boards show missions that you can't accept because "requires large landing pad?" Or do they simply not show those missions and offer different ones that you can take?

Or do they let you take those missions anyway and you get to the delivery point and it turns out they can't even accommodate you :o

You see all of the missions. If you can't do one because you can only land on large pads (like an Anaconda), then it'll be in the "can't take" section of missions. You can still see them, though. I *think* they fixed the delivery redirects that you couldn't complete in a large ship, but I don't often do those so I can't really say.

I spent a good chunk of today just undermining Patreus. I got my 1500 merits for rank 4. I think that's enough. I'll get my pacifier multis and probably just let the rank lapse. It was good fun having a full wing and just rolling through interdicting everything, though. You have to interdict and kill them before the fun police show up to shut down the action (or random bounty hunters, etc). It's a little more exciting than RES farming, for sure.

EDF is also handily winning our war in the BGS right now. Pretty much just shooting fish in a barrel, but it's nice to take stations and such over.

I support anyone, anywhere, undermining Patreus :)

I just depledged (after over a year) to join Sirius to get some pack hounds. I don't know if I'll do any others.

I love that stations have a callsign for you based on the manufacturer of your ship and your commander name.

Every time I get in range a station will be like Delacey Romeo Oscar November.

    Yeah I'm Unicorn November Charlie.

They did a really good job of making all the different words sound natural when strung together like a real person is saying it. Sometimes rarely I can hear the computerized aspect of it, a word cut off a little too soon or something, but it's generally very good.

Since I'm planning to jump ship soon and get myself that Cobra Mk III, I wanted to ask what people recommend in terms of weapons. I understand the conceptual differences between burst, pulse, beam etc., but I was wondering what people tend to like best or recommend. (So far I've been gimballed pulse laser all the way.)

The general basic setup is lasers on the small weapons, kinetic on the larger ones. For my Cobra, I go 2 small beam lasers (gimbal) and 2 medium multicanons (gimbal or fixed). The small hardpoints are at a bit of an awkward angle in the Cobra, such that you'll want to be a bit above your target, or slightly pitched up. This is because they are underneath the ship, and the ship is almost totally flat.

Beam lasers draw a lot from the distributor, but I feel the damage they do to shields is highly worth it. To balance it out, multis draw very little power from the distributor. If you don't really want to worry about distributor draw, you can swap out the beams for pulse. I don't recommend putting kinetic weapons on your smaller hardpoints (unless you're going all kinetic), because the way armor works tends to make small munitions much less effective against bigger, harder hulled ships than you would think.

[edit]- Also, smaller multis have small clip sizes, and waiting on the reload constantly is annoying AF.

Thanks, Derrick, that's very useful. Guess I should start thinking about using fire groups, instead of just having weapons on Button #1 and scanners on Button #2.

At the moment, yes. Not sure if they will be 'tuned' or not, but they can quickly knock out external modules if you target them (for example, destroy their weapons or thrusters).

They have somewhat small ammo capacity, and require a 'lock on' period, but yes, they are effective.

They are pretty crap against shields though (and no damage to modules with shields up), so you'll want something to take down shields fast. They also can be countered with point defense turrets, so you need enough to get through those (once you do, the PDTs tend to be destroyed).

  • ZeroczZerocz Space Cowboy In SpaceRegistered User regular
    To elaborate on that:
All weapons do full damage against shields.
Kinetic weapons do more damage to hulls than thermal weapons.
Small weapons suffer a damage-reducing penalty against medium and large hulls.
Medium weapons suffer a penalty against large hulls.
Large and huge weapons do full damage to all.

It's set up this way so that big ships with big guns are more effective against each other, without being able to vaporize small ships in one shot.

Do I have to buy special 'medium sized' weapons for medium hardpoints, or is it one size fits all?

Medium hard points take gear up to medium size. You can put small guns in there but you're not maximising your potential.

And smaller weapons don't provide any upside. It's not like they track faster or something. And Cobras don't have serious power issues, so mediums shouldn't be a problem to fit.

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!
  • DissociaterDissociater Registered User regular
I have a hard time telling if a weapon is medium or small. Is it those dots?

Also, when I'm in the outfitter store I can't tell if a weapon requires ammo and how much you can hold/how much it costs. Is there a way to check that out?

  • TubeTube Registered User admin
If it doesn't have the word "laser" in it, it requires ammo. I think that is a 100% solid rule but someone can correct me. I can't remember the new outfitting screen well enough to remember where size is listed.

Part of me wants to play again and part of me is like I'll wait for fighters and IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT I FEEL LIKE THAT

I sort of wish they'd just put QOL stuff out in smaller patches rather than padding out the big updates with them.

ALSO there are two updates still to go in this season and at the current rate they won't get them out this year. That's pretty bad for them! Their business model seems to be based somewhat around a yearly season release. My guess is that they'll double up multi crew and character creator, because I can't see how you do one without the other. Charactor creator on its own is a super fucking dull update. They could maybe get both out in Decemberish. Mainly I want to already know what season 3 is going to be like.

You can tell the size of the module by the number at the front of it. 1 is small, 2 is medium, 3 is large, 4 is huge for weapons. 3F pulse lasers are large pulse lasers. 1D multi cannons are small, etc.

I don't think we'll see 2.3 and 2.4 this year. Maybe 2.3 in Dec but that's it IMO. I think it is entirely acceptable for them to have longer seasons than one year, instead focusing on quality.

That's just games development, and to a greater extent MMO games development. Space games also seem to occupy a particular niche of people who aren't ever satisfied, maybe because it's so easy to think of crazy unrealistic new features that would be amazing to have.

Frontier also had a really rocky start to their updates. Wings was the poster-child for functionality that should have been in the game and Powerplay was the poster child for a horrible idea that some guy on the team kept insisting would be amazing so they had to waste a whole dev cycle on it. They really raised their game with this season but the stink of those early updates lingers.

I think PP could still be amazing if they make some changes to it. It has the potential to add more political drama and stuff to the galaxy's backdrop but is just too damned grindy to engauge in as it stands.

However I think we might be moving towards that now. The new station types like shipyards and whatnot could be used as defend / attack objectives in missions along with cap ships for powerplay. If they do that, then it will finally lend some feeling of actual presence to PP missions and make you feel like it's a real war. We'll see if they do this, it's certainly no easy task I'm sure but would IMO finally make PP into an engaging experience.

I think they need to strip a lot of unnecessary complexity and obfuscation out of it, and add the ability to communicate within your PP group

  • TubeTube Registered User admin
I'm giving vague thoughts to running this in a second monitor to stack up missions while I work. This may be a dumb idiot idea, but you know, I want a Cutter and I'm giving up on the idea that the rank grind will be changed in any meaningful way.

Got my Cobra Mk III - yay! I'm not impressed with my first kill with multi-cannons, though; it took me at least five minutes to kill an Eagle, even though I did spend most of those five minutes shooting at the bugger...

Edit: I think I'm now at a point where I should start making certain goals to give my playing some sense of direction. I'm not all that interested in trading (though I'm happy to do trading missions), I have no interest in mining either. My as yet very vague plan is to get myself and my Cobra to a larger high-tech system and spend some time doing missions and bounty hunting so I can upgrade the equipment I have. Any other suggestions for fun goals to set yourself?

Multicannon require good deflection to get consistent hits. This includes the concept of leading your target but often overlooked is how you should be flying to reduce the angle of deflection as much as possible.

If you get on an Eagle's six o'clock, drop its shields and then drill it with well placed MC fire it'll go up really fast.

  • TubeTube Registered User admin
I use cannons, and I'm not real great with them so I use them as shotguns essentially. Get so close you can't miss and BOOM. My Anaconda is a defacto large ship killer because if every shot lands it's a real bad day for them, but smaller ships last longer than you'd think. My effectiveness has gone way up since I replaced the huge cannon with a beam though.

  • DissociaterDissociater Registered User regular
I'm in a Cobra MKIII and I have it kitted with 3 multi cannons and a seeker missile. Once those shields go down I light them up so quick. But I generally fight things around my size or weaker.

Seekers cap at medium unfortunately. That said an Itano Circus from an Anaconda would be an amazing sight.

one of my friends ran out of fuel the other night cause of a bug, he jumped, but didn't, but the server got his shit all out of wack and he ended up in a random system with no fuel.

So, I had to figure out how to transfer fuel. It was fun saving him as he was stranded in the middle of space. Felt like a true hero.

After of course I jumped to him, realized I didn't restock limpets right the first time and had to go back to the station to buy them and then go back to fill him up >>
