Both my siblings and to some extent my mom are overreactors. One time I had to pull up beside my grandmother on a narrow road on the Ranch, and they were all literally screaming at me to slam on the breaks etc etc. Instead I pulled up beside my grandmother completely without incident

My dad just forgets hes supposed to be giving driving advice.

She's better about it now but she will still make a noise and grip things in turns sometimes ("is there something about my driving you would like to comment on, mom?" "no, no. Mmmph." *death grip*

AFAIK, there are two types of computer memory currently: RAM and solid state memory. Basically, RAM needs to stay powered to store data, while solid state memory does not. If you cut power to RAM, the data it was using that power for is lost. However, RAM also can edit its memory much faster than solid state memory. Due to this, we use solid state memory for what you usually think of as computer memory. File storage and whatnot. Stuff that you want stored long-term, and thus would not want to need to power constantly to store. Meanwhile, RAM is used for whenever you want your computer to perform some process. Anything more complex than the storing or moving of files, I think, as it'd be super slow to use solid state memory there.

RAM is short for "random access memory". It means you can access any unit of memory in the same amount of time, regardless of where it's physically located. It doesn't matter whether it stays powered or not (if it needs to stay powered it's called "volatile RAM", otherwise it's "non-volatile RAM"). Anything with spinning disks (a CD, a hard drive) is NOT random access, because time is spent spinning the disk or platter to the appropriate portion. On those devices, location can become very important.

Solid state drives are a type of non-volatile RAM. In practice, if you're buying computer parts, you'll usually see separate categories for RAM (a handful of gigs of volatile memory) and for SSDs (many gigs of non-volatile memory). That's because SSDs take up a niche much more similar to hard disk drives than to volatile RAM.
