How important is having a passport right now...
I got a passport 10 years ago because I at the time had a friend in France that I visited, and I had reason to go to Canada, and the whole homeland security was heightened enough that if i wanted to go to canada, i felt i better have one to get back across the border.
Now I no longer have a friend in France so I'm unlikely to need to go trans-continental but the possibility i might want to cross over to canada for a day or two is in the air. Do I currently still need a password to enter/return from Canada if i have a US license?
I want to know if i should bother to renew it. 110 bucks for a stamp on my current passport seems a likely waste of money.

Yes, you need a passport now to get in/out of cananda.

If only driving, you can get the passport card.

It's an enormous help in a lot of job / government-related paperwork, too, in my experience.

Depending on your state an Enhanced License is also an option. In NY it runs another 30 or so and lets you travel into Canada and Mexico via land/sea.
Though as others have said, passports are generally useful and it's like 11 bucks per a year and they are not real easy to get quickly.
