Thirty years ago, when I was six years old, this motley crew of oddballs from a city in the middle of nowhere WON BASEBALL.

I was only a tiny child but the excitement was real, and it launched me into the world of baseball fandom and - well, I'm a nerd, so of course I had to start collecting cards and memorizing stats, because how else could I live with myself?
And then the bottom fell out, and this team went right to the bottom of the standings and stayed there for TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS - the longest posteason drought in professional baseball. It was kind of awful to become a fan of a sport right as your local team started sucking with a passion. There was a decade there where you actually couldn't give Royals tickets away. Who wanted to pay ten bucks for parking to watch a hopeless shutout game?
That sad period was finally broken last year, when we went to the Series and lost in game 7 to San Francisco's remorseless cyborg pitcher from outer space. If you watch the game closely, I swear you can see the lasers glowing out of his eyes.
But now, thirty years later, history has smiled on us and given us another winning team of oddballs, misfits and castoffs, and they've delivered one of the most exciting seasons of sports I can remember, coming back from certain doom again and again and again. And it's been so exciting. I've gotten back into the game after years away, and dozens of my friends online and off have joined me in this new enthusiasm. Baseball, in Kansas City in the year 2015, is now suddenly...hip?
The fireworks are going off all over the city, and my neighbors are crowding the streets, and I am going to step outside and meet some new people, hopefully!

@ronya I'm always incredibly suspicious of these types of "undercover" investigations. The FBI in particular loves to insert an undercover operative into a community, then that operative encourages people to engage in illegal activity. When they take the bait, they get arrested and the FBI claims they stopped a terrorist plot. Despite the fact that no plot would have existed without the FBI's direct involvement and encouragement.
They did this with environmentalist groups and militia members as well. And now they're doing it with Muslims.
It's entrapment, pure and simple. But it makes the bosses happy and makes the middle class feel safe from a threat they think actually exists.

The conceerns expressed by Muslims when these sorts of thingscome up or increased powers are proposed are always odd. They're rarely expressed in terms of overreach, instead just concerned that in being watched they will be disappeared - which generally suggests to me that they are harbouring rather unfortunate beliefs or not able to differentiate between what the powers actually are and the scenarios they target.
It's a lottery where the winners get about ten seconds worth of foreknowledge.
