The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Helldivers is a co-op top-down shooter by Arrowhead Studios, which means half the fun of the game is in the spectacular failure brought on by friendly fire accidents ("accidents"). It takes place in a dystopian incredibly free future where Earth is now a single fascist very democratic world government, and it's basically like if Starship Troopers had to fight the other two Starcraft races in additions to space bugs.
The game has been out on PS4/3/Vita since March, but now it's coming to Steam December 7th! Preorder and start serving Super Earth today!
Also I have 42 accidentals in 10 hours of service. Definitely best team mate.
+1

Helldivers is such a good game that I sadly haven't played a lot on PS4. Just swirlin' space capes around, dumping bullets into teammates by accident...
I watched Cryoatic stream the Steam version a few days ago, and he assumed the extraction ship wouldn't squash him to death. Oh how very wrong he was.
I never got to play this with anyone. Only done the tutorial.

I've heard really good things about this game. And I'd like something to play that is Diablo-esque with a little more teamwork that isn't in a janky first-person perspective...
I stupidly stood under an airdropped motorcycle and got crushed
The driver gets in, and a teammate runs behind him to get in the sidecar. The driver chooses this moment to drive backwards, killing him.
He drives forward and takes a wide circle and accidentally runs over a third teammate.
Desperate to call in a reinforcement beacon, he gets out of the motorcycle. Unfortunately, he was driving at the time, so the motorcycle continues forward and kills him.
Helldivers is a fantastic game and I could go on for quite a while about how much I like it.
Anyone know if the deluxe edition is worth it if my friend group is gonna be deep on this game for a while
Depends, some of the DLC is really good (the sickle, the twin autocannon mech, I think the UAV is dlc as well). Other is not so much.
For example, the UAV once upgraded shows samples on the map, which is really useful for leveling up.
Depends on if they are going to sell the DLC individually.
It's $3 for each of the 14 pieces of DLC, $40 for the Deluxe, and $45 for the base game + the DLC bundle
The Deluxe is obviously the *Best Value* but it's only $5 more if you want to play through the offerings in the base game then upgrade when you want more options
I did the tutorial stuff earlier and it felt pretty okay with KBAM, if a bit sluggish (in an intentional feeling sort of way).
I think the only change I'd prefer is if wasd was back/forward/strafe and you turn via the mouse rather than keyboard turning- I can see my fingers cramping up during a longer mission.
The Ranger Pack comes with all PC copies I think, or maybe just preorders?
But yeah, the UAV should the first thing you upgrade. On a Hell Dive mission we got like 23 samples which is ridiculous. Also seeing all patrols on the map is just really fucking useful in its own right.
Yeah I am glad ya'll suggested the UAV upgrade because it's been super useful so far.
Do different weapon types have differing effectiveness against different enemies? The laser gun is kinda cool but seems less potent against the shield guys etc

Different weapons are definitely better/worse at dealing with certain enemies. The higher caliber AR (the AR-20 I think?) is good at dealing with almost every enemy in the game, barring proper heavy armor.

I should remedy that

Would there be fellow defenders of democracy here in se++, because my normal gaming group is uninterested and it makes me sad.

Couch Co-Op Helldivers. That way you can punch your friend in the arm when they drop a beacon on your mech.
(Mechs are fucking broken)

Has anyone had a chance to try it out with mouse + keyboard? I'm quite curious how well they implemented the control scheme for that.
Well I don't own any PC compatible controllers so
Regardless, they apparently have KBM support so I see no reason why it might not at least be pretty okay?
counterpoint: Play with what you want, I find nuclear throne to play way better with KBAM

I absolutely will not.
You can't modify weapons outside of the upgrades you can get on them.

I want to play Helldivers with you guys
Took 45 minutes but we did it!
This game's cool
we spent approximately 20 with 3 people dead and one running away
