I am using my ps3 hooked up to an HDTV. this TV goes to 1080i and 720p. Now, my main question is (I have an HDMI cable I got for free going to the TV from the ps3) would it be better to use Component? I know HDMI just isn't useful unless you go 1080p, but would that make component better on 1080i and 720p?

my second question is: I have it running 1080i (when asked which resolutions can my TV do, I selected all that it can do) so it runs in 1080i now. Would I be better off simply not selecting 1080i so it forces it to run in 720p? I know almost everyone says 720p is better, but do any games run in 1080i anyways? wouldn't it default to 720p no matter what?

There's no reason you'd be any better off switching to component. HDMI is digital while component is analog, so theoretically it would be a bit worse.
