Just a quick shot from last thread before bed on the subject of the Cliven Bundy standoff.

I actually had forgotten about it, just looked through a bunch of stuff on it and its sounding like basically because he still enjoys some local support for his position he's not getting the hammer just yet. Instead he and his group harass people trying to get the cattle off the illegal grazing lands to get them to leave, using guns as a show of force. It sounds like the cops have come close to having a shootout, but instead wisely have de-escalated the situation so that they're not shooting U.S. citizens over cows munching on the wrong grass.

However if they actually shoot someone? They're screwed. They lose local popular support? They're screwed. As it stands thanks to all national figures dumping the guy off it sounds like they're effectively enforcing the law but because of the local enforcement can't put the bow on it.

It is entirely sustained through the idea of nobody wanting to be the one to bring bad PR on themselves. If we really pass a law in this country to repeal the Second Amendment entirely then you can imagine that there will not be popular support for gun ownership. Ideally everyone would act like adults in that situation, but for the fringe element that really means it when they say from my cold dead hands well...sure, why not?

the Bundy standoff refused to use tactics they have used before; past sieges have opted for blaring music at an unholy volume for extended periods until successive rotations of guards can't get any sleep and give up

    cutting water/electricity works great too

if they respond by opening fire first, well, then that just gives the state carte blanche, doesn't it? At least it should. But then, as came up back during the threat, even the US left was deeply uneasy about Waco; the fantasy of local communes is too strong; the ideological divide is not really along the axis of centralized vs decentralized power, no matter what rhetoric may imply

So I was just watching Bob's Burgers at 3 am as is normal and not at all a bad idea on a work night, when I see the description of the next episode:

The Equestranauts. At a convention celebrating the magical cartoon pony series The Equestranauts, Tina discovers that most of her fellow fans are grown men.

The amount of willpower it took to not let it start playing...

Bob's Burgers is so good because the writers seem totally genre savvy but never fall into the endless pit of self-reference that seems to come with that.

    Huh.

That Tony Zee guy who did the SETI talk about the possibility of Cepheid variables being used for interstellar communication also wrote this:

    http://arxiv.org/abs/physics/0510102
We argue that the cosmic microwave background (CMB) provides a stupendous opportunity for the Creator of universe our (assuming one exists) to have sent a message to its occupants, using known physics. Our work does not support the Intelligent Design movement in any way whatsoever, but asks, and attempts to answer, the entirely scientific question of what the medium and message might be IF there was actually a message. The medium for the message is unique. We elaborate on this observation, noting that it requires only careful adjustment of the fundamental Lagrangian, but no direct intervention in the subsequent evolution of the universe.

There is an episode of Bob's Burgers titled "Itty Bitty Ditty Committee" which I am 96% certain is a reference to the moderately obscure independent film Itty Bitty Titty Committee.

When I was young I prayed that the sun wouldn't explode. I was so afraid of anything that would change the world I know it would be irrelevant that such an event was billions of years away.

I kind of have that anxiety today, though compared to stellar danger (which has now cut down to maybe one billion years, so yay) such threats feel much more immediate. And it's something the seemingly ironcast laws of economics prevent us from doing something about.

I feel like the production value and tight editing in Nathan for You is the only thing that keeps me from curling up into a ball and actually dying when I watch the show. So I am not sure a more awkward, lower budget version of that is a good idea for me.

When I see a photo of a cat, I think, oh hey that is a cat. If I were near that cat while that photo was being taken, I'd have deep scratches in my skin.

Dunno what it is but cats just really really hate me almost immediately on sight. I was attacked a whole lot as a kid. It did not endear them to me.
