December 15th, 2016: Corrin and Bayonetta announced as new challengers in the final Direct for Smash Bros. 4. Cloud released as DLC.
The next generation of Super Smash Bros. is here! For the uninitiated, Smash Bros. is a fighting game, only it's got some platforming elements and the goal is to knock your opponent off the stage instead of depleting their HP. Oh, and it stars some of Nintendo's most famous characters alongside a handful of third-party legends. The game can get quite deep, offering a ton of options for play so you can tailor things the way you like it. You can have a chaotic eight-player battle with just pokeballs spawning, or a super-serious 1v1 affair. After fifteen years since its humble debut on the Nintendo 64, Super Smash Bros. has become one of the most beloved franchises out there, being both a sweet fighting game and awesome homage to all things Nintendo. And this time we got DOUBLE the smashing to do, as Nintendo has released the new Smash Bros. on both the 3DS on Wii U. We're maximum smash saturation in here.
The Golden Smash Rule: Do not bring up competitive vs. casual bullshit. I do not understand why people think a game can only be played one way, and that the one way just
coincidentally happens to be their way. Regardless, it will not be tolerated here. Complaining about arrogant tournament players or filthy casual scrubs will net you an infraction. This was something that plagued the Brawl threads, and thus far the modern Smash threads have been refreshingly clean of all that garbage.
Got all that? If so, then read on and...

A new addition to Smash 4 is the Omega (Ω) version of each stage. The Ω Stage is basically Final Destination while retaining the skin and theme of the original version of the stage, so you can play Final Destination with a Mega Man or Pokemon theme if you desire it. Stages in
italics are paid DLC.

The 3DS version features
over 100 songs, and the Wii U version has an album-crushing 400+ songs. Once again, you get a handful of songs per stage and you can pick which songs play, but the Wii U has far more songs per stage and greater control over song frequency than the 3DS. Songs can be found
here, but here are some choice tracks.

How do I find people to Smash?
Check out the
Friend Codes Sheet for competition. Don't forget to add yourself and your region (if you're comfortable with it) so people can get an idea of what lag might be like.
HOW DO I UNLOCK THE CHARACTERS AND STAGES?
I'll keep this in spoilers for those that want to be surprised (
warning: secret characters WILL be openly talked about in this thread. Note that the two versions have different unlock methods. Both games have the alternate "play X matches" requirement, which can be satisfied by playing off or online, with just bots, 1 stock matches. The game is not picky. Every time you satisfy a character's unlock requirement, you will be challenged by that character to a 1v1 match with one stock each. Should you lose, that character will keep challenging you whenever you finish with just about any offline match or mode.

How do I unlock alternate moves!?
Some custom moves are hidden behind challenges. They are:
Wii U
- Dire Hyrdant (Pac-Man): Score at least 200000 points in a single game of Target Blast on Stage 2.
- Accele-Reflector (Falco): Get a chain of at least 150 in Trophy Rush while playing alone and as Falco.
- Ripping Boomerang (Link): Play as Link and score 50 KOs or more in Solo Endless Smash.
- Rock Hurl (Charizard):Play as Charizard and get a score of 100m (328 ft.) or more in Solo Home-Run Contest without using the bat.
- Guiding Bow (Pit/Dark Pit): Get a score of 25 or more in a single Rival Smash while playing as Dark Pit.
- Exploding Popgun (Diddy Kong): Score at least 150000 points in a single game of Target Blast on Stage 1.
- Dashing Assault (Marth/Lucina): Clear the "The Falchion's Seal" event on normal difficulty or higher.

- Liftoff Loid (Villager): Battle 2 or more times on the Tortimer Island stage in Smash.

- Close Combat (Ike): Destroy 1000 blocks in Trophy Rush.
- High Speed Drill (Meta Knight): Win 5 Smash battles with Meta Knight.
- Exploding Popgun (Diddy Kong): Destroy 3000 blocks in Trophy Rush.
- Effortless Blade (Marth/Lucina): Clear 100-Man Smash within 3 minutes.
- Explosive Punch (Mario): Score 200000 or more in Target Blast.
Now for the rest. The best way to get customizations on the 3DS is to play Classic at a comfortable difficulty and watch the slots. Wait for the thing you want and hit the home button. When you resume play while spamming the A button, the roulette will land on that spot. If the roulette is transitioning between two items, it will land on the item coming up. Keep in mind that eventually the roulette will stop on its on, so you may have to settle for less, but this method should net you anywhere from 6+ customizations a run.
The Wii U more varied since the 3DS trick doesn't work. Some go by high intensity Classic, others do Master/Crazy Orders since you can cherry-pick customs for specific characters (a franchise icon with a gift
typically means a custom for a character from that franchise, although sometimes it can be equipment). Crazy Orders can be particularly lucrative if you have a knack for it, as Crazy Hand will vomit up additional goodies that you can pick up during the final fight with it. Smash Tour also vomits a lot of items in general, especially if you crank up the number of turns. Buuuut that involves playing Smash Tour so your mileage will definitely vary there.
Another option for both versions is Trophy Rush. Pick Donkey Kong, max out the time, and spam down B while dodging obstacles. You should be able to pick up three customizations every 2.5 minutes this way. The final alternative is to grab a speedy character in Smash and just scour the map for treasure chests. They usually drop one customization per chest, so you
might have a big payout.
How do I get better at Smash?
To be brief: find a character you like (ignore tier lists or player opinion) and play the shit out of them. Play a lot, watch replays (especially of losses), and look up guides online to benefit from the knowledge of more experienced players. The AI is okay to practice with, but don't overdo it because even the 9 AI will teach you bad habits. If you have nobody to play with, then online is fine and you should also use training to practice setups, combos, and just get adjusted to your character in general. For Glory is...not the best for learning as it has no matchmaking so you will lose to bad players that just abuse strategies that newbies easily fall prey to, or get incredibly good players that will trash you. It leads to a very uneven learning experience but it's something. Otherwise, play PAers online or look for a local smash scene in your area.
Where can I find people to play with? I missed the other two times you linked the friend codes sheet. Here it is.

I plan on trying tournaments again with the release of new DLC. Yes, there will be a tournament on the 18th and/or 19th so we'll see how it goes. This may be the last effort I give this thing, as I tried a few back in September and got like three people.
What about using Tournament M-
Tournament Mode was six months of wasted development time. It's actually remarkable as to how bad it is, and unless they actually announce a slew of improvements (or let's be honest, a complete rehaul) then I have no interest in messing with it. I couldn't even create a 1v1 tournament for casual, items-on play. It's awful!
How about casual tournaments?
I have literally had one casual tournament go off in the whole year. One. People say they wanted casual tournaments, but there is less interest in those than competitive ones. I'm more than willing to set up for-funsies tournaments that run through the week or on Sundays or whatever, but I need people.
I miss tournaments! What can I do to help?
Give me feedback. Why weren't you signing up for tournaments? I didn't change the times really: I picked a time that, at our peak the same time last year in Fall 2014, got like 20+ people. So something happened with you all than any other factor. Are you busy on Saturdays now? Do you hate something about the rules, like switching to two stocks? Does the lack of prizes kill your motivation? The more feedback I get, the more I can tailor these things to everyone's tastes.

I would honestly not be surprised if they've been spending time trying to solve the tech issues with Ice Climbers and announce them largely as they were in Brawl. Sakurai has shown in the past that he can do some crazy things with the hardware like how he got the 3DS version running at 60fps.
I could see a compromise being that if you have a New 3DS they show up relatively unchanged (thanks to extra power) but maybe take a big poly hit on classic 3DS (or even only do so in games with a lot going on where performance would be effected).
Honestly I think if they did that the game and possibly system would fly off the shelves all over again. Dat Star Wars craze yo.

"__________ and _______"
Next time I don't care if I miss out on a trade, I'm going on a total blackout. Fucking l eakers. I even disabled images and avoided looking at my timeline...
Nintendo, you knew this was going to happen, why do it again?
Or credible ones
We got Cloud. Anything's credible now. Hell, considering the timing I'm half-expecting Darth Vader to be announced.
Wouldn't be surprised if we come out from this with an embarrassment of riches AND disappointment.
Do they need to? I feel like a good announce like, say, Inklings or some other ballot character would be enough, even if it's not like the "OMG I NEVER EXPECTED THIS!!!111111" type announcement Cloud was.
