Hmm so I guess when I got my copy of Baulders Gate EE I got it through Beamdog directly, not through Steam so even if I tie the game to Steam I can't buy the DLC through it?

there's a 40% discount on the steam controller if you buy it in a bundle with a preorder of dark souls 3
I'm tempted, I need a PC controller and that makes it cheaper than a 360 or xbone pad

I don't think most people would recommend a steam controller for third person action games. It doesn't have real sticks and that's a dealbreaker for a lot of people.

is the thing in the lower left thumb position not an analog stick?

It is but there's not a right stick.

Hmm. Maybe I can get my friend who has one to bring his up the next time he's in the area and see how it feels to do camera control on the touchpad dealy. This deal will probably be gone by then though, oh well.

Gotta say im kinda surprised of the lack of talk regarding Hyper Light Drifter on here. I was expecting more talk about it in general based on the kickstarter. Still want to try it out though.
If the trailers are any indication I'm at the very least buying the soundtrack.

You may want to look into it but from what I heard, the soundtrack isn't like the music in the trailer which everyone loved. More synth, I think though I don't know first hand.

I just wrote a post about this on the ds3 thread so I'll cross-post here:
Obviously YMMV but I will say that I have been playing DS2 WITH my Steam Controller and it has been completely fine. I think I'm even using the default control scheme or maybe the community favorite, I forget. But the dual stick isn't that bad because the right stick is your camera control, right? In this case, the right pad does camera but it's set up as a track ball type setting. You can change that to a stick or mouse emulation if you want and it's extremely tweakable. The thing that is probably the weirdest to get used to, at first, is that the face buttons are below the right "stick" instead of above. This took some getting used to on all games but now I pretty much use my steam controller exclusively. The other criticism I've often heard is that the face buttons are too small and closer together. This just too done getting used to for me.

Tl;Dr: steam controller has been totally fine for me in ds2: sotfs. I don't feel like I'm at any disadvantage with it.

    edit:

RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 came out on mobile and was exactly as bad as a cash-in mobile game could be

Planet Coaster is coming out later this year; it's by Frontier, the developers of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 (and also Elite: Dangerous)

RollerCoaster Tycoon World is in Early Access and doesn't look very good

    darleysam wrote: »

Are you asking because you saw something or you just really felt like makin' some roller coasters? Because yeah Planet Coaster's probably the closest thing to that's coming out, and could potentially be good.

I saw this on youtube somewhere by a lets player, couldn't remember the name! Didn't realise it was early access, it made me feel very nostalgic of a sudden for Roller Coaster Tycoon. I will wait for it! Gotta build some theme parks.

Funny thing about Planet Coaster. They missed a lot of their early access targets because the devs were too busy playing the game.

I have said a couple things about it already!

IT seems more solid than the alpha but again just a tad too generic still.

The weapon SFX are still super disappointing.

I'm uploading a youtube of it so I'll link that when it's done.

Ask any questions you have that are more specific?

I'd say if they made a solid campaign, yes.

But unfortunately all we have to go on is this somewhat generic multiplayer.

It's growing on me, but slowly, it's kinda a mushemup of UT99 and Quake 3 arena in terms of speed and feel.

Is this just a multiplayer beta or is there some singleplayer?

Because really I'd only get Doom for singleplayer.

The same could be said about Wolfenstein two years ago, but that turned out pretty well.

    Just multiplayer unfortunately.

I dunno, I hope the singleplayer is good, the combat flow in deathmatch and warpath certainly works, but I hope the campaign has a decent length and presentation to it.

I may not have unlocked sleeveless arm armor yet

You can customize your armor by each arm, legs, head and chest.

Little disappointed also that there is no Doom Girl if you will.

    Doom loadouts:

    slot 1: chainsaw/fists
    slot 2: pistol
    slot 3: shotgun/double barreled shotgun
    slot 4: chaingun
    slot 5: rocket launcher
    slot 6: plasma rifle
    slot 7: bfg

everyone gets this loadout all the time, why would you want anything else?

I didn't really like Pillar of Eternity's gameplay (guess I was born too late to enjoy old school CRPGs), so will I feel the same way about Divinity: Original Sin?

Divinity's gameplay is entirely turn-based so it comes off as a much different thing than PoE's, I think.

Hyper Light Drifter is really fun, gorgeous, and the music is excellent. Definitely a lot harder than I was expecting, but rewarding as hell when you finally make progress. Pro-tip, invest in the dash upgrade as soon as possible. The timing takes some getting used to but it potentially gives you infinite dashes instead of just the normal 3.

I wish Divinity's gameplay wasn't so wizard focused

All of the other classes really lag behind the spellcasters

And like, I love the cool terrain stuff, don't get me wrong, but it makes spellcasting effectively necessary, which is a shame

Divinity has a very addicting environmental interaction in it's combat as well.

Barrel of water? ya you can blow that up and now there's water everywhere in a pool. Now hit it with an ice spell, and it's frozen and people are slipping on it.

Or hit it with electricity and turn it into a big ol bug zapper. Freeze it but want to cross it now? Hit it with fire and turn it back to water, hit that water again with fire, turn it into a steam cloud etc.

Just tons of interactions with the environment.

I really liked the innovative classes that PoE did

Like, the Chanter, the Monk, and the Cipher were all really interesting, nonstandard stuff

I will admit I would prefer the turn based of Divinity, but I would not want to sacrifice how much fun those classes were to play

And I grew up playing Baldur's Gate, so the PoE setup doesn't really bother me

  • TheStigTheStig Registered User regular
Yeah I'm not a fan of PoE's combat, but the classes and the game as a whole make up for it. I just never got what people liked about the whole real-time turn system. It just feels like I'm slowly losing control of the whole thing.

There was one in Quake 3, dammit! She was called Crash.

...she was also the tutorial character you were supposed to beat up on to learn how to play the game.

...Also, why wasn't BJ Blaskowitz in Quake 3?

    it's a little less obtuse than BG's

2E had some really fussy things with weapon speeds and saving throws and THAC0 that made actually figuring out how much damage you were doing a pain

  • BionicPenguinBionicPenguin Registered User regular
I was never able to get into infinity engine games (didn't try them until years later), but I really liked PoE. The modernizations and a UI that isn't complete garbage really help.
