spirits within was stupid nonsense and if I'm gonna watch a pretty Square movie full of stupid nonsense it's damn well going to be Advent Children because at least it has characters I loved when I was twelve flying around in cool poses and shit
I think Final Fantasy Spirits Within gets a bad rap
I think it gets exactly the rap it deserves
or maybe I was just setting myself up for disappointment by expecting something with "final fantasy" in the title produced by square to have anything to do with final fantasy
I dragged my friends to the theater with me to see it for my birthday, even god damn it
spirits within is just as much "final fantasy" as ff7 or 8

Isn't Spirits Within basically a rehash of FF9's plot, but in a SciFi setting?
I've literally never heard that, and see nothing of that myself, but would be super interested in seeing someone who does think so try and substantiate those claims

Final Fantasy 7 doesn't have any good characters though.
It can get pretty tiresome watching the hot take parade that this place is turning into.
you mean like this one?
No, not really. There's just been a slow rise of people responding to conversations wherein people are discussing something they like with "Actually that thing is bad" without further content. It's not against the rules and if that's how people want to post that's up to them, but the bland shittyness gets stale.

It was all about ghosts and harnessing the power of the spirit that indwells the planet. Gaia I think they called it in FF9. I saw Spirits in theater and played FF9 at launch, and haven't revisited either sense, but I recall feeling that way back then.

that was a theme in ff7 as well with mako power and the lifestream. I would agree that "the planet's mystical life force" is a common theme between spirits within, ff9 and ff7, but one major theme by itself isn't enough to make me feel like they recycled the plot.
So that's super funny but allow me to cast some serious doubt on anyone with a Twitter handle "_____ shot first" claiming they've never seen Star Wars before

Also they don't name bobba fett until the third movie don't they? She knew who he was in the second.

Probably seemed bigger than it was just cause they came out so close together. Like I said I haven't played 9 or seen Spirits Within in 15 years just going of what I remember thinking at the time.
Just finished rewatching Empire Strikes Back, man that is a fun film. Also man I forgot how many really good shots it had in it. It made me really bummed out that we will probably never see an OT criterion collection even though the films could really use that treatment.
Also, having just rewatched it I have to say that people comparing Boba Fett and Phasma are way off base:
The main difference is that Boba Fett constantly succeeds and is given respect from characters we know are powerful. Fett outsmarts Han, right after he managed to outsmart the imperials by figuring out his trick and tracking him in the garbage. When Luke his trying to ambush them carrying frozen Han, it's Fett that catches on and ends up ambushing Luke instead, buying himself time to escape with Han. He fully succeeds in his goals for the film. More importantly, while he doesn't say much, Vader, who is the biggest bad ass in the movies, gives Fett considerable respect. He's the only bounty hunter vader addresses, warning him against disintegration. But more importantly when Fett expresses concerns over Han dying in the freezing process and losing money, Vader doesn't tell Fett to sod off or force choke him, he tells him that the Empire will pay him his bounty! What?! Why this respect? Why this deference? This is the same Vader that has been choking his admirals left and right for failing him. This scenes of his and Fett come between scenes of him and Lando, who he is constantly screwing over and changing the terms of their deal. Yet he respects Fett for some reason, and this elevates Fett, this makes him feel like a peer to Vader.
Phasma, on the other hand? She doesn't do anything in the first film. She threatens Finn, who then betrays her. She gets ambushed by Finn later and made to lower the shields and then gets tossed into a garbage disposal. We don't see her succeed at anything in the film and we don't see anyone give her much in the way of respect. I'm really hoping she gets some better scenes in the next film!

Oh man, Vader respects fett because he knows he is Jango's son and respects the clones. I'm sure it's accidental, but that is now my head canon.

Finn/Poe is fun internet shipping, but I seriously doubt that Episode VIII will undercut the serious foundation and foreshadowing of the Rey/Finn relationship established onscreen by TFA and that serious speculation on seeing Finn/Poe onscreen as a romantic relationship is a form of wishful thinking and self-delusion, despite the Luke/Leia to Han/Leia precedent.
Star Wars Eps VII-IX to feature first major polyamourous relationship in mainstream pop culture.

I read zero chemistry between Rey/Finn
Finn was deffo interested
but they're running from a near-cold start if they choose to go with that

I kind of felt like they had Finn attach himself to Rey and her show zero interest as a method of subverting expectations that they'd end up together just because they're the male and female protagonists. It seemed so blatant to me that I felt like it had to be intentional.

I still think Phasma's coming over to the light side. And Finn is gonna get to see her sans armour!

Finn gets set up on a blind date with her, doesn't recognize her without the armor, falls madly in love while she spends the whole date trying to poison him and hilariously failing because sitcom antics.

Finn and Rey
Tossing this in spoilers just in case I guess
By the end of the film I feel like they have become friends, but very very explicitly just friends.
The scenes with Finn fawning over her feel like a dude who has met a woman for the first time who has looked at him like he might be a person and he's not really super well socially adjusted because of course he isn't.
Rey's treatment of him felt like it was friendly, but had absolutely zero romantic interest, as I mentioned the total lack of romantic chemistry between the two of them feels so explicit that I have a hard time believing it wasn't intentional.
And I want to be clear I'm not caring any aspersions on anyone with the following statement, but if it were two dudes in their position, nobody would think their was any hint of the possibility of any kind of romance when you consider just their chemistry, I think. Which you can contrast directly with Finn and Poe's much stronger chemistry, which to be clear I also think is by no means a sure thing. But all the same, Finn and Poe feel closer than Finn and Rey, regardless of what context you read into that closeness.
I am not particularly interested in shipping Finn and Poe, but I think the groundwork for not setting up Finn and Rey has been lain so well that I think I'd be disappointed if they do end up together somehow.

Well, if the internet has taught me anything it's that this sentence is definitely not true.
Final Fantasy 7 doesn't have any good characters though.
Final Fantasy VII has a vampire, a ninja, a robot cat and a talking dog.
A talking dog.
Red XIII was my favorite character when I first played VII.
He probably still is, honestly.
Really I have an action figure of Red XIII that I got at the height of FF7 craze in Japan and was given a lot of shit over because I had not played the game or showed interest in playing it

More like Rad XIII.
But it would also appear that the director of episode 8 ships Finn and Poe.
Could this be partially responsible for the rewrites?
