So this is happening:

A large group of armed militia members have broken into and occupied a federal building in Oregon.
Radical militia members from across the country descended on Harney County, Oregon today to protest the conviction of two local ranchers for arson on federal land. They claim “that the federal government had no authority in Harney County.” The militia occupying the headquarters building at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a splinter group from the larger protest. The gambit seems intended “to provoke a standoff with the federal government.”
In a phone interview with the Oregonian, Ammond Bundy said that “would not rule out violence if law enforcement tries to remove them.” He called the headquarters building “the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds” and said he was “planning on staying…for years.” In a message on Facebook Bundy said he planned on establishing the facility as a base for militia members across the country:
In an ominous sign, one member of the group, Jon Ritzheimer, posted a goodbye video to his family on YouTube today. “I want to die a free man,” Ritzheimer says.

An Idaho militia leader who helped organize the earlier march said he knew nothing about activities after a parade of militia members and local residents in Burns walked past the sheriff's office and the home of Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son Steven.
Beth Anne Steele, an FBI spokeswoman in Portland, told The Associated Press the agency was aware of the situation at the national wildlife refuge. She made no further comment.
Some local residents feared the Saturday rally would involve more than speeches, flags and marching. But the only real additions to that list seemed to be songs, flowers and pennies.
As marchers reached the courthouse, they tossed hundreds of pennies at the locked door. Their message: civilians were buying back their government.
Dwight Hammond has said he and his son plan to peacefully report to prison Jan. 4 as ordered by the judge.
Dwight Hammond, 73, and Steven Hammond, 46, said they lit the fires in 2001 and 2006 to reduce the growth of invasive plants and protect their property from wildfires.
The two were convicted of the arsons three years ago and served time — the father three months, the son one year. But a judge ruled their terms were too short under federal law and ordered them back to prison for about four years each.
The decision has generated controversy in a remote part of the state.
In particular, the Hammonds' new sentences touched a nerve with far right groups who repudiate federal authority.
Ammon Bundy and a handful of militiamen from other states arrived last month in Burns, some 60 miles from the Hammond ranch.
In an email to supporters, Ammon Bundy criticized the U.S. government for a failed legal process.
This seemed a decent summation of the situation.
Basically it seems that some ranchers got convicted of a crime in federal court, protests were sparked based on the perceived injustice of the situation and repudiation of federal authority. Nutters from in and out of state desceded on the protests and then went even crazier and have occupied this building.
Given the lack of any mention of hostages, I'm assuming the building was empty, which is good.
Hopefully this situation will be resolved peacefully.
Hopefully no politicians or public figures will attempt to fan the flames of anti-government militia nuttery.
And maybe, some day, America might actually deal with this kind of shit. Cause it appears Cliven Bundy's legacy lives on.
People with guns still think those guns allow them to supersede the law and challenge the legitimacy of the government. And previously, they've managed to get the support of government officials while doing so. Maybe this might be something that should stop.
Or maybe you disagree on that last bit. I don't know, debate and discuss it if you do. Otherwise let's all keep up to date on the latest news together!

Kind of hoping this doesn't get much media attention over the next 24 hours and fizzles out as a result. The convicted also planning to surrender themselves peacefully is a good sign, since it takes the wind of righteousness out of their sails.
Can we just solve this the cheap way? JDAM the fucking thing and build a new one.
I also like that fact. That they have basically no real demands since the criminals sparking the protests are peacefully surrendering. You know no demands other than being allowed to steal land from the country. I actually want people to see the hell out of this story. Mainly because everyone should be pointing at it and saying, "You see this, don't freaking do this".
I want people to point at it and say, "This is domestic terrorism, this is extremism and it is not okay". I want every one of the people participating to be caught, and then tried for treason and sedition.
I also want military to get involved because this definitely qualifies for enemies both foreign and domestic and people need to realize that these people have effectively declared war on America, and they need to be treated as such. If you are going to violently sccop nearly pacifist occupy protesters out of public parks then you need to do the same with these silly gooses, and not just let them wander off because they got bored of their treason.
Also lock the ratfuckers up for life because what they are doing shouldn't be tolerated. This is just a group of entitled little shits, causing problems because they didn't get their way and they are doing it in one of the most unacceptable ways.

maybe this time the Feds will actually take action.
I wonder if these geese brought along women and children to hide behind like they did back in 2014.

How about we just arrest them like the criminals they are instead. I'm really not big on cops murdering people because its easier than actually doing their job. There's a whole 'nother thread as to why I feel that way.
You know the line where someones right not to get summarily killed vs a cops right to self preservation in doing their job has some blurry points in it. But encamping yourself with a bunch of guns and basically saying "come at me bro" is not one of them.
Hopefully Obama won't be be back down on this like last time and sends in the FBI/ATF or idk a SEAL team.
Morons like Cliven Bundy, you give them an inch and they'll take a mile. Nothing would make me happier than to see them in handcuffs this time.

I don't care whether they get arrested like clowns by police, or killed by a military action, I just want an unambiguous reaction from the government.
I shudder to think what an abject failure must look like...
18 U.S. Code § 2384 - Seditious conspiracy
I do care when agents of the State kill someone when there are any other options available which avoids killing people.
This does not seem like it should be an outlier view.
because remember, the only thing dividing terrorism and patriotism is the color of the assholes skin.

That's just the start of what they can get charged with. Criminal trespass, breaking and entering...
And if they shot up a vending machine they'll have to answer to the Coca-Cola corporation.
There probably won't be a siege so much as they'll cut power water and sewage. Deny others access and starve them out.
Cause that part at least kind of sounds like bullshit to me.
It seems likely there was never a trial and that the ranchers pled guilty, which is what led an appellate court to require a harsher sentence (the law in question carries mandatory minimums and terrorism enforcement is something we care about now, I guess)
it's worth mentioning that both the actual defendents were scheduled to report to jail on monday and don't appear to have much of a hand in this current militia business
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
Further, what is occupying what appears to be a visitors center going to accomplish aside from making you look like a dick bag?
This is sure a way to describe this, ABC.
Gotta coddle these fuckers at every turn. Imagine the blowback if you came out against armed standoffs with the federal government over denying that the federal government has actual police powers!
If you take their statements at face value, they want to establish a regional base for militia groups and also take over the county and bring back mining, ranching, and logging jobs. Of course they can't grasp that the mining and logging jobs left because the free market decided it was no longer profitable to mine or log in the county.
Also there are some who want to force a confrontation with the Feds because they think the people will rise up alongside them.
-Indiana Solo, runner of blades
They believe the county sheriff is the highest ranking legitimate law enforcement official.

No.
I will never stop enjoying this bit from the 1998 court decision that evicted Cliven Bundy: http://www.scribd.com/doc/217770195/Bundy-1998-DNv
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
