Militia takes over Federal Build in Oregon: America continues to America

So this is happening:
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2016/01/02/3735576/150-armed-militia-members-take-over-federal-building/
A large group of armed militia members have broken into and occupied a federal building in Oregon.
Radical militia members from across the country descended on Harney County, Oregon today to protest the conviction of two local ranchers for arson on federal land. They claim “that the federal government had no authority in Harney County.” The militia occupying the headquarters building at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a splinter group from the larger protest. The gambit seems intended “to provoke a standoff with the federal government.”

In a phone interview with the Oregonian, Ammond Bundy said that “would not rule out violence if law enforcement tries to remove them.” He called the headquarters building “the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds” and said he was “planning on staying…for years.” In a message on Facebook Bundy said he planned on establishing the facility as a base for militia members across the country:
In an ominous sign, one member of the group, Jon Ritzheimer, posted a goodbye video to his family on YouTube today. “I want to die a free man,” Ritzheimer says.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/oregon-ranchers-occupy-national-wildlife-refuge_56888a61e4b0b958f65be382
An Idaho militia leader who helped organize the earlier march said he knew nothing about activities after a parade of militia members and local residents in Burns walked past the sheriff's office and the home of Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son Steven.

Beth Anne Steele, an FBI spokeswoman in Portland, told The Associated Press the agency was aware of the situation at the national wildlife refuge. She made no further comment.

Some local residents feared the Saturday rally would involve more than speeches, flags and marching. But the only real additions to that list seemed to be songs, flowers and pennies.

As marchers reached the courthouse, they tossed hundreds of pennies at the locked door. Their message: civilians were buying back their government.
Dwight Hammond has said he and his son plan to peacefully report to prison Jan. 4 as ordered by the judge.

Dwight Hammond, 73, and Steven Hammond, 46, said they lit the fires in 2001 and 2006 to reduce the growth of invasive plants and protect their property from wildfires.
The two were convicted of the arsons three years ago and served time — the father three months, the son one year. But a judge ruled their terms were too short under federal law and ordered them back to prison for about four years each.

The decision has generated controversy in a remote part of the state.

In particular, the Hammonds' new sentences touched a nerve with far right groups who repudiate federal authority.

Ammon Bundy and a handful of militiamen from other states arrived last month in Burns, some 60 miles from the Hammond ranch.

In an email to supporters, Ammon Bundy criticized the U.S. government for a failed legal process.

This seemed a decent summation of the situation.

Basically it seems that some ranchers got convicted of a crime in federal court, protests were sparked based on the perceived injustice of the situation and repudiation of federal authority. Nutters from in and out of state desceded on the protests and then went even crazier and have occupied this building.

Given the lack of any mention of hostages, I'm assuming the building was empty, which is good.

Hopefully this situation will be resolved peacefully.
Hopefully no politicians or public figures will attempt to fan the flames of anti-government militia nuttery.
And maybe, some day, America might actually deal with this kind of shit. Cause it appears Cliven Bundy's legacy lives on.

People with guns still think those guns allow them to supersede the law and challenge the legitimacy of the government. And previously, they've managed to get the support of government officials while doing so. Maybe this might be something that should stop.

Or maybe you disagree on that last bit. I don't know, debate and discuss it if you do. Otherwise let's all keep up to date on the latest news together!

They need to drop tear gas on that place from a plane like they are putting out a forest fire and then every single militia member should be put in jail for sedition.

The building was indeed empty, due to the new year.

Kind of hoping this doesn't get much media attention over the next 24 hours and fizzles out as a result. The convicted also planning to surrender themselves peacefully is a good sign, since it takes the wind of righteousness out of their sails.

Every one of them should be locked up. I don't even care about optics on this one. It's time the Federal Government came down hard on these wacko lunatics.

I also like that fact. That they have basically no real demands since the criminals sparking the protests are peacefully surrendering. You know no demands other than being allowed to steal land from the country. I actually want people to see the hell out of this story. Mainly because everyone should be pointing at it and saying, "You see this, don't freaking do this".

I want people to point at it and say, "This is domestic terrorism, this is extremism and it is not okay". I want every one of the people participating to be caught, and then tried for treason and sedition.

I also want military to get involved because this definitely qualifies for enemies both foreign and domestic and people need to realize that these people have effectively declared war on America, and they need to be treated as such. If you are going to violently sccop nearly pacifist occupy protesters out of public parks then you need to do the same with these silly gooses, and not just let them wander off because they got bored of their treason.

So they took on the tyranny of the Federal government convicting them by going into an empty building? They realize you can't just claim land by planting a flag on it anymore, right?

I also like that other militia groups have denounced these folks, but it still doesn't make me trust those militia groups further than I can toss them.

IMO surround the place in such a way that the fuckers can't use their shitty guns to get out the situation or hurt anyone. Then keep them locked down long enough that any food they have will run out and the experience will become fucking miserable for the little shits. Ideally, it will result no one being a martyr for this shitty group and maybe getting it through their minds, that their guns will not allow them to beat the rule of law.

Also lock the ratfuckers up for life because what they are doing shouldn't be tolerated. This is just a group of entitled little shits, causing problems because they didn't get their way and they are doing it in one of the most unacceptable ways.

Apparently 3 of Cliven Bundy's sons are involved in the occupation.

maybe this time the Feds will actually take action.

How about we just arrest them like the criminals they are instead. I'm really not big on cops murdering people because its easier than actually doing their job. There's a whole 'nother thread as to why I feel that way.

You know the line where someones right not to get summarily killed vs a cops right to self preservation in doing their job has some blurry points in it. But encamping yourself with a bunch of guns and basically saying "come at me bro" is not one of them.

Hopefully Obama won't be be back down on this like last time and sends in the FBI/ATF or idk a SEAL team.

He really wussed out the last time, and it made the government look bad and emboldened the nuts. Heck, there's some guy in Texas who's been holed up for ten years, and the only reason his compound hasn't been stormed is because the government "doesn't want another Waco". Waco was a resounding success! A cult was destroyed and is no longer a threat, and what the people in charge don't understand is that if you let nutjobs run wild in Waco situations because you don't want bad PR, it just makes more and more Waco situations.

It was a resounding success except for the whole "cult burns themselves alive and somehow the Feds get blamed" thing.

So, putting aside slightly in the crazy militia people, is there precedent for a judge just deciding "these people who were convicted and sentenced didn't get enough of a sentence so I'm sending them back to more prison"

the oregonian ran a long article about these jokers (that is, the ranchers' whose conviction sparked all this) the other day; it was super friendly because that's what the oregonian is these days, but ultimately a picture emerges of some guys who took repeated liberties with BLM land (BLM owns about 60% of the grazing land in oregon), including letting their livestock graze without a permit, burning fields without a permit, burning fields while firefighters were nearby, and so on. They were repeatedly warned essentially to tighten their shit up, before ultimately landing in court and getting a relatively light sentence (for arson) from a local judge.

It seems likely there was never a trial and that the ranchers pled guilty, which is what led an appellate court to require a harsher sentence (the law in question carries mandatory minimums and terrorism enforcement is something we care about now, I guess)

it's worth mentioning that both the actual defendents were scheduled to report to jail on monday and don't appear to have much of a hand in this current militia business

I think the part that seals the deal for me on this bunch of "patriots" being just a bunch of dick bags is that the people they are ostensibly doing this in support of have willingly surrendered to the local police.

Further, what is occupying what appears to be a visitors center going to accomplish aside from making you look like a dick bag?

If you take their statements at face value, they want to establish a regional base for militia groups and also take over the county and bring back mining, ranching, and logging jobs. Of course they can't grasp that the mining and logging jobs left because the free market decided it was no longer profitable to mine or log in the county.

Also there are some who want to force a confrontation with the Feds because they think the people will rise up alongside them.

I will never stop enjoying this bit from the 1998 court decision that evicted Cliven Bundy: http://www.scribd.com/doc/217770195/Bundy-1998-DNv
Bundy appears to argue in his Motion to Dismiss (#4) that the Complaint (#1) should be dismissed because this Court lacks jurisdiction since Article IV of the Constitution cannot be imposed upon him. Bundy claims that he is a citizen of Nevada and not a citizen of a territory of the United States, and he also quotes religious texts.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.
