Ok. Many people have figured it out already, but I wanted to say it somewhere at least.
I'm bi. Technically pan, but bi.
I cannot come out to my parents, it's not a battle I can fight and it wouldn't help things. Gender identity issues are already something they're v leery and refuse to budge on.
But I guess I'm now comfortable in my identity enough to say hey, I'm definitely NOT straight by any means.
Oh if you're interested in the exchange and the character I am watching the episode in question right now
The MoW attacks a prostitute and she fights it off. As Mulder and Scully interview her she says it was wearing underwear and then explains she usedto wear the same kind but she had recently transitioned. She then goes on to say the police didn't believe her description and thought she was on crack. Scully asks is she is and she responds " Well yeah!". Honestly I think the crack joke was because it took place in a truck stop but it wasn't the best choice
The character herself has a weird latino accent and a deeper voice but not like a stereotypical deep voice. She's only in one scene for like 40 seconds so it's easy to skip over as well.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
Just a heads up, there's some real rough stuff in the latest X files regarding trans people.
fuck me
really?
Several of my trans friends have told me that they're going to stop watching because of it.
I know it involves a sex worker and some not great language and stereotypes
In a nutshell:
The character in question is a transgender sex worker, who even says "I transitioned last year." She is one of the witnesses who saw the monster (and smacked it good with her purse), and really is presented as the most reliable witness. But also mentions being on crack.
Later in the episode she is mentioned "Hitting like a man" and Mulder starts to say something along the lines of "She used to be...she was born..." but stops himself as if conscious of his inability to phrase it correctly. He then explains it's a relatively common medical procedure. The six foot tall lizard man that can shoot blood from it's eyeballs that he is telling this too initially is enthusiastic about the idea as a solution to it's problem, until Mulder mentions that 'They cut off your genitals.'
So it's not the worst ever portrayal, but it's not like that's a high bar to clear.
Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

Seems like a bad sign for the show that they have to rely on tired old tropes. But I suppose that's the nature of all these movies and shows pandering to nostalgia these days.

So tired of that particular simplification, both as a trans person and a feminist (vaginas aren't just not-penises! They are nega-penises! Or whatever! Plus there's a bunch of other vulval stuff, but no one cares, apparently.)
(that said I'm glad it wasn't worse, even if it wasn't great. It's like the writers wanted to write in someone who was trans but it was ultimately irrelevant but kind of tripped up.)
There's also the fact that everyone they interact with in that episode is a parade of weirdos, so that's some uncomfortable subtext. It was just awkward.

I mean, yeah, he knows it's not right but he still says it.
It's still a trans character who is working as a sex worker, on drugs, given lots of coded language about still being a man and then while it's lampshaded there's still some nasty misinformation.
The sad thing is your still right Decomposey, that is one of the better portrayals of a trans character.
I'm just sick and tired of trans people only getting to be sex workers, unless they're sympathetic which means they're probably going to get played by a cis actor.
Mulder was also trying to explain transgender to a person that didn't know what gender was (and the separation of gender and sex) to begin with. The entire conversation was just uncomfortable for all involved.

If I were to try to oversimplify what it was in the media that fucked me up so bad that I started privately identifying as a woman by like 13 or 14 but didn't even consider transitioning until almost 27, it would boil primarily down to...
--The idea that trans women are basically drag queens and they have either no ability or no interest to minimize aspects of physical masculinity.
--The misconception that transitioning was entirely surgical.
The latter especially means that the use of trans women as a bullet train to dick jokes is not just some handwavey thing for me.
Just a heads up, there's some real rough stuff in the latest X files regarding trans people.

The character actually looked really feminine, either played by a cis-female or a transwoman. And I think Mulder may have mentioned a non-surgical option, but my memory isn't good enough to recall the whole thing and it's kinda fuzzy.
But yeah, the 'cut your genitals off' part was definitely straight up dick joke and pretty bad.

He definitely mentioned that surgery wasn't required. It wasn't the worst treatment, and had I guess high points. Still pretty much sucked from the start with crack smoking w trans woman. Followed by playing really a dude for a gag while at least letting the main character remain progressive in universe.

i want to add that the surgery conversation was more the monster's fixation than mulder's. in the middle of his word salad, he brings up the surgery, but then goes on to say that isn't even necessary, medically, and tries to give a bigger speech on identity, but before he can dig himself into a deeper hole, the monster clings onto that as being a solution to his problem.
basically, the joke is a were-lizard is so clueless as to what srs is, that it thinks that could stop its transformations.
then that's when mulder tells it what the surgery actually is.
i don't know if it makes it more or less palatable, but it really was more thought out than "get surgery, change genders"
He definitely mentioned that surgery wasn't required. It wasn't the worst treatment, and had I guess high points. Still pretty much sucked from the start with crack smoking whore trans woman. I know its not really the particular issue we're talking about but could we not use that word?
i will say what i found most problematic is all the care in the world was taken with mulder describing being transgender to the monster, when everything else about the character seemed like an afterthought.
it felt like they wanted stereotype jokes to fit the episode's theme but also wanted to be progressive and just could not tow the line.
They had a gay character in their episode last week, that was apparently in a relationship with someone else but totally ready to suck off Mulder in the bathroom of a bar because he misunderstood why Mulder wanted to meet him and just assumed it was for sex.

Is every fucking character in this show a sex worker? If I went into the storyboard room would there just be a giant whiteboard with the words "MARGINALIZED GROUP + SEX WORKER" written in block letters and circled fifteen times?

Hum. So I want to start with an apology. Cause I am sorry if that is a more problematic word than I think. I do tend to use harsh words in person to kind of shock who I am talking to into reality. I try to refrain online though so I guess I am left asking if this is a personal thing or a more general thing I am unaware of? Either way the apology stands I just want to be able to know how to edit my language appropriately.
