I'm not distracted by phones in theaters. If the offender had the phone out for nore than a momeny to answer a text, then yeah it is BS, but otherwise I think it is fine.

Turn off your phone for a couple hours and watch the film.

I'm aware I'm probably in the minority here but I refuse to be silent any longer

when you acknowledge the majority of people disagree with you, and claim they do find it distracting

    and then you do it

    that's lame

I used to do it because it never even occurred to me it was a thing people could be bothered by

Now I still do it but I'll do it less often, dim screen, angle it so as not to be visible, etc

There's a story in Zen Buddhism that goes:

Zen student: Master, what is the most important thing in the world?

    Zen master: Attention.

    Student: Is that all?

    Master: Attention. Attention.

Student: Why is attention so important?

    Master: Attention. Attention. Attention. Attention.

Student: What does that even mean?

    Master: Attention means attention.

...Now I haven't studied Buddhism and I have no idea what this story means. But I'm going to say that it means:

put away the damn cell phone

    Scandal brewing
The International Cycling Union confirms that pursuant to the UCI's Regulations on technological fraud a bike has been detained for further investigation following checks at the Women's Under 23 race of the 2016 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships. This does not concern any of the riders on the podium. Further details will be shared in due course.

Of interest is that the relevant regulation is this:
1.3.010 The bicycle shall be propelled solely, through a chainset, by the legs (inferior muscular chain) moving in a circular movement, without electric or other assistance.
In para-cycling, mechanical prostheses/orthopaedic braces for upper or lower limbs can only be used by athletes who have been evaluated in accordance with the UCI classification procedure and who have Review (R) or Confirmed (C) status. In no case may a mechanical rosthesis/orthopaedic brace for the lower limbs be used outside para-cycling events.

So everyone is assuming that it is a hidden motor.

    wait

if it doesn't concern any of the riders on the podium it means someone potentially cheated and lost anyway?

liebot what is the saddest thing

If it is a hidden motor it is going to be really weird.

The whole idea that there might be riders doing that is basically treated as conspiracy theory, because it came out of a company that makes a kit for converting bikes to e-bikes boasting that their equipment could easily be hidden in a standard racing frame. That's kind of true of the motor, but not really of the batteries, and if you were to do it in any way that is practical you'd get such a minimal boost, for a such a short time, that it is unlikely that it would overcome the weight penalty of having a seat tube stuffed with motor+batteries.

In theory, if it came down to it, it could be decisive in a finishing straight sprint, but that's a hell of a thing to gamble on.

    https://youtu.be/ideiS-6gBAc

    I... don't see a motor, I see inertia.

Which applies to bicycles, and their wheels, even if the rider falls off and the bike falls over.

Also, it isn't obvious from that video, but is if you see another angle (which don't seem to end up on youtube) that that is a switchback corner on a pretty steep hill and the bike is basically sliding down it in the direction of the slope

You,know they run these things in front of every movie now that politely ask people to not talk or text during the film, right?

Most theaters get mad at the 1-2 people who think that their texts are more important than the enjoyment of the hundred other people in the room.

i haven't really checked but it seems plausible that there are people using phones in theaters without distracting me

how would i know at that point

the most distracting offenders are intolerable though

some guy was doing it at cirque de soleil in vegas and i reached down and poked him and asked him to put it away and he did and the show was immediately much more pleasant for me

I also find it a little amusing in all of our discussions with SKFM about why you'd want to see a movie in a theater, most of it was wanting the social experience, etc

Yet you all want none of the distractions inherent to a social experience! you want a social experience on your own terms

unless you're texting the people you came with how is being on your phone being part of a shared experience with them, or the rest of the audience, some of whom find the fact that you're on the phone at all pretty shitty but might not even say anything because they don't want to talk over the movie or they have an aversion to conflict

my theater applauded at the beginning and the end of the new star wars. room was hyped.

i saw a midnight opening night showing of snakes on a plane and the whole crowd said the samuel l jackson line in union and there were people who cosplayed as flight attendants and snakes.

Jake are you conflating your desired movie experience with that of all moviegoers

I also hate when people laugh into the next line

I despise when people say a funny line out loud after it's delivered in the movie

all of these things are also bad along with using a phone or eating too loudly or moving at all or thinking loudly
