@TankHammer After a fairly extensive search, I cant find a single hotel within reasonable distance that is not sold out at dragoncon, so it doesn't look like I'll be going
Appreciate the earlier heads up. Maybe I can do it next year.
Much like how I read the books dozens of times each, I probably watched the show a ton. I couldn't say anything much about it now though, other than they were faithful adaptations of the books.
I can't say that about the movie, which I hated purely because of how familiar I am with the source material. They made too many changes in smashing those stories together, and none of them were for the better in my opinion.

I could have told you that. If you were coming alone I have an extra slot in my room, though. Might need to sleep on the floor at times, though.
I listened to the latest Black Tapes episode the day it came out, but I guess I forgot to talk about it, here? Anyways...I don't think that show is ever going to be high art, but I really do appreciate that in its second season, it has turned its attention to how the events of the show, and their investigations, are actually affecting the people involved. Doing a spooky case every episode, while stringing some connective tissue between them, that was fine, but it was definitely losing effectiveness as it went. Turning its focus inward, and having it affect the investigations and how they're being reported has really breathed some new life into the show.
In related news, I've largely given up on Tanis. The central mystery isn't compelling, and I really don't like the main character. And it's...really bad at moving the plot in a way that flows naturally. Virtually every conversation is: "stop investigating this. you're making it worse" "oh but I don't wanna" "okay well something bad might happen to you!" and then a follow up conversation "hey have you stopped investigating yet" "no" "okay well now I'm going to tell you everything, I guess, and be a recurring guest on your apparently popular radio show, but I'm still going to tell you to stop investigating" "well I'm not gonna" "okay fair enough"
Yeah. Season 2 has been pretty great example of keeping things fresh. Like the stakes feel a lot higher through more internal means, which is heavily appreciated. And just seeing how damaging this has been on both Alex and Strand has been super effective for me. And not this episode, but the previous one was probably their best as far as just being purely spooky.

one of these days I'm going to get a vcr that I can hook up to a modern tv so I can watch all the tapes of weird cartoons that I recorded when I was a kid
there's definitely some uh
slight stereotyping
in that "not intentionally malicious but still shitty" 90s way
tintin is very, very french, and the french are much more ok (even today) with what americans would call amazingly racist caricatures
I still like the tintin books though

Re:Hotels and Dragon*Con
I'm pretty sure hotels sell out like a year in advance or something absurd, like okay Dragon*Con just ended aaaaaand whoops okay the hotels for next year are sold out now, hence my commuting back and forth on the train the year I did go
Literally the first two Tintin books is "haha those crazy African natives" and "haha those crazy American natives"
That second one also has a scene where Tintin finds oil on Native land, the U.S. Army comes and forces them off of it, oil companies come and build a bunch of derricks, then a city is built up around them. All in literally one day. It ends up with a traffic cop making fun of him for wearing a cowboy outfit in what is now a bustling city.
It's like a political cartoon. The first Tintin books are really weird. Blue Lotus and Broken Ear also have some pretty racist content. They get away from that stuff later on.
It's a series that was started being written in the 1930s and a lot of the time it shows.
dug a bit more and she claims she did not consent to have her words published, and that she received no response when she reached out to have them retracted

This is weird because Patrick seems better than that
But what a thorny fucking thing to step into for an article

that would be a good reason! though I feel like it's less likely than just not liking how her responses come off

Does Wishbone count as a fictional dog?

crab zine is free but will take donations toward an aquarium
Tintin was always more of a pulp hero rendered in comics.
Also holy balls were those racist. I wonder now how much of that was kept for the show.

also there's the japanese policeman who's on the case of the smugglers in the golden crab case (which is the first two parter)

It is kind of a real product of it's time
Also Tintin is Belgian and apparently the author did reget his earlier portrayal of people!

Patrick wrote an article now he's being harassed by the founder of an anti human trafficking group? This is a tricky scoop
http://www.audioentropy.com/
she described patrick's article as a "hit piece" and appears to think it was propaganda against her
Yeah I actually had just got to the part of the article about her so I edited that post
Because suddenly the circumstance became clear! It seems like she is being an asshole for a reason, just not a very good one
This is weird because Patrick seems better than that
