Oh man, En Passant pisses off people so much. In casual pickup chess games I have done that and had people argue that I can't do it because it's not a "normal rule" or some nonsense. Yes it is! It totally is!
People do not like losing or suffering a blow because of lack of rules knowledge. Because it sucks. It's almost worth mentioning at the start of a game so they know.

Fucking mana burn.
i started playing hearthstone and my favorite thing to do is to make people lose by running out of cards.
it's like they thought they were playing one game and I was playing another the entire time.
mana burn actually isn't a rule any more
mostly because it was only ever legitimately applicable in the case of things that gave you two+ mana at once, which are pretty rare
I remember it being pretty relevant while I was playing. Lots of mana-generating stuff to be had, and playing around mana burn was a significant part of strategy.
Cabal Coffers is a relatively simple example.
hm yeah I guess that one would hit you pretty bad
IME it mostly fell into the camp of 'oops you didn't play your spells in exactly the right order' which like, it's already a bad enough punishment to lose mana you don't need to add damage to it
life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws
fuck up once and you break your thumb / if you're happy at all then you're god damn dumb
that's right we're on a fucked up cruise / God is dead but at least we have booze
bad things happen, no one knows why / the sun burns out and everyone dies

After one side moves a pawn two spaces, the other side can immediately capture the two-space pawn with their own pawn by moving past the two-space pawn.
You know, I can't figure out by what system English adopts chess terms. In most languages "castling" is some variant of "rokade" or similar. Yet for En passant it's the same as in any other language.

I love these decks in Magic, but they've lately done their very best to make it not a competitive strategy.
Luckily you can do it in Hex with great success! (Also Hex is good now, everyone play it)

mana burn was for:
flavor
not really intending to be a big deal 99% of the time
absolutely fucking over people playing shit pc ports

I only played Magic casually in high school, but those I played with demanded mana burn if I ever tapped more lands than I used. Bull. Shit.

phds aren't supposed to be things you get just things you perpetually work towards forever what is going on here
I dunno. Seven years (almost) is pretty much forever.
That's 1/4 of my life. Fuck. Shit just got dark.
If it helps I'm your age and instead of a PHD I once put seven years into what was ultimately an unsuccessful relationship!
Did you not benefit over not being in the relationship?
I benefited hugely, it was definitely a positive and valuable experience.
I'm just not sure if it was PhD valuable :P
Though lord knows what I'd want a PhD in anyway.
Oh I'm not comparing it to a PhD. I'm just saying, a seven year relationship that benefited you and was positive and valuable doesn't sound like an "unsuccessful" relationship.
(I am super weird about our conception of relationships as successful iff they end via death. The Asari have the right idea, which mirrors my philosophy.)

Cower, all you sinners
They'll finish Adam's work
It's been a year past, brothers
Our souls are all now one
My computer is kind of on the borderline to run The Division but it is pretty fun so far although I definitely need to investigate new 3D card and CPU solutions over the next month.

Fucking mana burn.
I think they removed that.
<----is an old.
They removed damage on the stack too, actually.
My power drain is suddenly decent without mana burn.
Refresh me, what is damage on the stack? It's been over 15 years since I played.
when it came time for damage to be calculated it was all done up at once and put onto the stack like a spell so you could respond to it
it led to weird situations where like a creature could be dead and still damaging people.
I think now damage is calculated and applied all in one go, there was never a reason for people to be able to respond to it. You can respond after blockers are assigned, that's good enough

Not yet.
I'd be super uncomfortable at the request, but I kinda don't care.

magic was fun because we played it in middle school and everyone had like 150 cards total cause we were kids
so it was like a really really long permadraft and you got used to what mess everybody had
