I like the Grumpcade format, because they'll occasionally have other youtuber personalities on the show, and at least there, it seems to be a mutually recognized thing that channels will be plugged and make sure to like/comment/subscribe if you like them.

This was only the second Guest Grump ever (or third?) and I don't know how much of it was cleared up before they started recording, but it felt much more like "Yeah, we have Steve-O here. You guys requested and Dan loves this guy. It was destiny!" and then the whole time, Steve just plugs his special and doesn't actually care about what he's doing with these guys. He's at least aware enough that GG have 3 million subscribers and there's bound to be a few fans of him in that base.

It was the third Guest Grumps, the second one was when Arin shit his pants.

I find it interesting that the grumps, while not having the subscriber and view/video counts of the big channels like mark/jack/pewdiepie, still seem to be the favoured lets play channel of lets players themselves. I watch mark regularly and jack often, and if feels like they will often reference/talk about the grumps in a 'look up to' kind of way.

I think it's because of the work the Grumps do to keep improving their comedy game. They seem to be constantly taking improv classes.

    This lucky penny is bullshit.

Well, they are much more comedy oriented than Mark/Jack/Pewds. A lot of the comedy in those channels are from their direct reactions to game, hence the facecam. The Grumps organically make things funny, even when it has nothing to do with the game. They have roots in improv, animation, writing and a lot more. Plus they employ a lot of people for a channel as 'small' as theirs. They did kinda pioneer the format somewhat, I never watched Let's Plays before them aside from the Rooster Teeth guys (who also have that kind of background).

Mark has a seemingly close friendship with the grumps so it would make sense that he looks up to them in that way

Also hasn't gg been around longer than those guys despite not being as subbed?

  • localhjaylocalhjay Registered User regular
I think Markiplier and Pewdy have been around a while, actually. Mark was one of the first dudes to show up in Hot Pepper Gaming, and that was when he was first blowing up.

  • Goose!Goose! That's me, honey Show me the way home, honeyRegistered User regular
Yeah, but ego raptor was doing videos on newgrounds and YouTube before gg

  • localhjaylocalhjay Registered User regular
Yeah, I am aware. But that doesn't mean instant success when changing formats. And Arin used to (and still does) get constant shit for shifting focus to GG over time. I think it was for the best though, as GG has brought him and everyone else involved great success which they absolutely deserve.

I'm particularly impressed by the outlier here being Barry in all of this. Arin was doing animations and comedy pre-GG, and same for Ross. Suzy had her own make-up and fashion channel for a while and enjoys some success on her own now with KKG. Danny and Brian were modestly successful internet performers launched into bigger success by association with GG, and then there's Barry.

Former video editor to the Grumps and JonTron, occasional guest on Danny's NSP videos, he's seemingly the least experienced in the ways of entertainment or comedy, but is such a natural when he's on cam for their skits or talking smack on GG. He's also arguably the most well-rounded video game player they have.

I think Barry is everyone's favorite

I also studied his video on editing on the GrumpOut channel and it has helped my own video editing immensely

Another amazing thing is all the charitable work the Grumps have done over the years. And not just actual charity fundraising either, but stuff like featuring animators and other Youtubers on their channel. I would never have seen stuff like FatCat, SoloTravelBlog, and many more if not for them.

Also I would pay actual money if they cut the Bullshit and just did a MST3K style show where they mock old movies.

This was such a delightful episode. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard.

Is time a gift or punishment?

I started watching the GoT episode, and it seemed like it was going to be great, but they started getting into spoilers pretty quick it sounded like. I'm late to the GoT party, only seen the 1st season of the show and I'm halfway through the second book. Had to stop the video =/

I mean, it's not on them. It makes sense that they would talk about GoT if they have an actor on the show.

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

I skipped the GoT portion because I haven't played the game yet, but the Mario Kart portion was wonderful.

  • Skull2185Skull2185 Registered User regular
It's not the Telltale game, it's some crap RPG. That's probably safe to watch.

Yeah. The game looks kinda garbage and doesn't get into spoiler territory. Their conversation doesn't really either but don't blame you for being careful skull

They basically stop playing the GoT game as soon as the game actually gives you control of the character.

I usually don't like Guest Grumps but that was a good'un. His silent frustration on Rainbow Road was so funny.
