err, maybe a cartoony gore warning at the end? If you see what's in the crate you'll get the idea

The bit where he yells "KOBE!" right before missing the garbage can had me in tears, because that's a thing my friends and I all did like 6 years ago.

Also I was introduced to the Dover Boys by /co/ in its "is love" phase.

some folks online are being weird smug about that

"pfft you guys are late to the party, 4chan was memeing dover boys five years ago!"

    it's a seventy-four year old cartoon

Neat! the Dover Boys cartoon is actually public domain due to a non-renewal of copyright after purchase :) Nice to see these pop up once in a while.

That cartoon is one of the early Chuck Jones and the folks at WB almost fired him because of that short. I love it dearly because it's some great smear frames.

    yup!

jones was tasked with both moving away from the "disney look" visual style of animating and animating more cheaply and smearing was his answer

the higher ups at WB fucking hated it but couldn't find anyone to replace him, either

another thing I didn't know about the short until recently, it's actually a parody, but the thing it's making fun of has more or less been forgotten

    I love/hate these descriptions:
Like other juvenile fiction of the era, the books often utilized exaggerated ethnic stereotypes and dialect humor. Blacks, Germans, Italians, Chinese, and Irishmen were often portrayed with unflattering dialects, which was common at the time. The books also had many heroic characters of these nationalities as well.
    translation: racist as heck

    But I didn't know this:
The characters from this Rovers parody would later appear in an Animaniacs episode and in the 1996 movie Space Jam.
    Synergy with the movie thread.

What is this referring to? Was there a popular tv show that had that specific kind of 'to be continued...'?

Huh. So smear animation is what it was called.

I remember doing that for my old gifs because I was trying to be more economical with my time.

Smear frames aren't the only example of limited animation in The Dover Boys, but it's the kind that Chuck Jones first pioneered.

It's amazing to think about how you can utilize cost-saving measures to convey things in an artistic fashion.

    "Dourua?"

I think they're confusing ル (ru) with ハ (ha), since バ (ba) would be close to the "vuh" sound they're looking for and since they don't put the " over any of the R kana .

ドルバー Dorubaa would be more accurate.

I mostly like this one because of the contributors to the channel, triple-q, was a regular in the small group of dedicated players the PC version of this game had for a long while, and managed to work in a reference to the fact that the track this music plays over has the single hardest turn in the game at the end

many a lead died at that fucking corner, let me tell you

I wonder if it is a cost-saving measure. The in-betweens would normally be handed off to an assistant, but the smear is something that needs to be done by the lead or the keyframer. The smear is just all the in-betweens in one frame.

It is one of several forms of limited animation, which are cost-saving measures but that doesn't mean they don't also enable the animator to have more control over the presentation of the animation on-screen.

I've been taking a class on this, so watch out.

I mean, it is a pretty great song to freeze frame on important moments in your life to be sure.

What? No, his chain snapped and fell off. He still had brakes, it's just that as soon as he realised the chain was gone, he couldn't pedal to speed up so he had to pick his lines and ride in such a way that he could get through the corners with as high an exit speed as possible.

Now everybody watch this, I hadn't even heard of this rider before today, but his videos have me mesmerised:

    https://youtu.be/5ud5T5I4XcA

Normally when you watch somebody riding DH, they are working VERY hard and you can see that by looking at what they are doing. This dude looks like he's just out for a leisurely roll down the street!

EDIT: Turns out he's a two-time world champion, but I have been too busy trying to follow Danny MacAskill and not the DH world champ scene...
