Like, I love local multiplayer, it dying out of videogames is why I got into boardgames and host a weekly night for my friends. And yes, local multiplayer can help form a group of strangers into a community.
But makes us better people? I'm sorry, no, absolutely not. Plenty of local communities are exclusive, hostile, toxic, misogynistic, homophobic, and all the things he leveled at online games. I am not sure if it was just naivety or privilege or what that drove this conclusion but it is way off base.
Local multiplayer just means face to face, it comes with its own perks and its own dangerous flaws.
Local Multiplayer started a LOT of fights between me and my brothers
Heck look at Monopoly, one of the original 'local multiplayers' I'm sure we can all think of at least one family gathering that led to monopoly and ended in yelling.
I think there's a difference between yelling and what the stereotypical Xbox teenager might say to someone they disapprove of.
I don't know how many Funhaus viewers hang out in this thread, but I'm hoping any who do are as sad as I am that Joel's leaving tomorrow. I've only even known about them/Inside Gaming for the past year, but it's bummed me right out that he's going.

But still, the point they're making is less about the arguments, and more about the potential toxicity of the arguments that GIFT can cultivate.
I do feel kind of gross posting my own stuff here, but in case anyone missed it, the makers of Cluster Truck put out a free game on April Fool's day that combined their truck-jumping gameplay with SUPER HOT's time mechanic, and it was really quite good
