You know what, some of the artwork of these isn't terrible, so I guess let me amend my statement and say that those designs in the shitty bland 3D modeling they're using look awful. I bet you could get some pretty cool sprites or even textured 3D models that didn't look awful.

The long story short is that flying adds a lot of weaknesses to the grass type. Especially against things you sort of wanted to use grass types on (Rock, electric, etc) you're also now super weak to ice rather than just mostly weak to it.
At best you've gained immunity to ground (grass already had 1/2x on this though I think?) and you're neutral to bug rather than weak to it.

From a type perspective, I feel like it would be better to consider the starter a flying pokemon rather than a grass pokemon, dont send it against anything you wouldnt use pidgeot against and you'll do just fine.

Yeah but ice isn't a real type, its like being 4x weak to dragon

I was never a big fan of tropius, always looked a little silly to me

For the story I expect wee little dapper bird to be just fine

Grass wants to be bulky and resilient but Pokemon has been hyper offense focused for most generations

For one shining moment I was able to use the best Pokemon, Ludicolo, in RSE as a bulky leech seed/toxic tank

For all we know it's torchic 2.0 and it ends up being like, grass/ghost

My son has recently started getting into Pokemon and he loves cats, so the fire starter and a copy of Sun are right up his alley.

Looks like I'll get moon, which is fine because that legendary is cool, and I'll have to see how the other starters look as they evolve.

This is shaping up to be like Gen V where I thought all the starters were hot garbage and eventually kind of came around on the Grass one being alright. Gonna reserve final judgement until we see their evolutions--maybe they get cool.

But that might change this Gen. I really love Rowlet. I like the idea of Poppilo, but I'm not sold on its design.

Last time I forced myself to choose a starter with a design I didn't like I got Oshawatt. Ugh.

Like Celebi has always been a great cleric/pivot, Venusaur has decent bulk especially when mega, Chesnaught is a solid defensive spiker with leech seed and drain punch

Defensive Spiker Chesnaught is one of my favorite things to come out of Gen VI.

I wasn't sure about these starters at first, but they've really grown on me in the several minutes I've known about them.

But Rowlet's making that a really hard decision right now

I also love cats, so I'm curious about the fire starter's other forms (initial stage ain't all that)

I also always choose the blue version, but this time it's actually pretty tough because both legendaries look great. Probably will still go with Moon and lament my lack of sun lion

Real glad the Hawaii speculation was correct. Makes for a cool setting and shows they're open to multiple regions in non-Japan countries

That's always a possibility for the early flying type you always encounter once you start your journey.
