Getting Tablet with T-Mobile, maybe?

My hubby is thinking of getting a tablet for his business. He already has a T-mobile android smart phone (Some kind of samsung galaxy lite, I think. Almost 2 years old) on a family plan package. A few things this tablet needs.
What tablet and purchase option would work the best for this?
- Be an Android tablet. One that isn't too slow and crappy. 9 inches or so would be nice.
- Be compatible with Square's Contactless & Chip reader (NFC Reader - Accept Apple Pay and Chip Cards). This is a big part of why he is looking for a tablet so preferably it should be on the compatibility list for that reader - https://squareup.com/compatibility
- He is looking to pay for it upfront rather then adding a lot to his monthly bill. In fact we want pay as little as possible monthly for the data plan.
What tablet and purchase option would work the best for this?
