How The [chat] Was Won

BogartBogart Streetwise HerculesRegistered User, Moderator Mod Emeritus
It's not a great film, but my God it's a great theme. Tom Hanks was on Desert Island Discs recently, picking a few records he'd want to keep forever, and this was one of them. It never fails to stir him, he said, and it's easy to see why.

The opening notes blare out and you can see the horse rearing up, a grim-faced man of action wielding a silver-handled colt on its back waving his hat. Wagons roll, hard-bitten women carve out a homestead, their man does what a man has to do, and of course there is the uncomfortable matter of genocide.

13/15 integration tests are green, I know that the last two will fail.

Spot one test that doesn't run, so I re-enable it.

9/16 tests are green. Hooray, non-isolated tests!

The answer is yes, Magneto can lift Thor's hammer.

Ostensibly because of his powers but I'd like to pretend it's totally because he's worthy.

  • BogartBogart Streetwise Hercules Registered User, Moderator Mod Emeritus
He's not worthy at all and cannot lift it, as it's not a metal he has control over.

    He does lift it!

But apparently that's only in the Ultimate universe.

There are always exceptions to every character's power, as the writer will insert a caveat about it not working on magic metal or something.

All I'm saying is maybe he should have read some more physics before he picked the name Magneto.

Wonder what Warren Ellis' spin would be on a Planetary version of Magneto. He did interesting stuff with the Fantastic Four analogues.

He does stuff like attempt to reverse the polarity of the Earth, freeze people in place by controlling the iron in their blood (which is very silly) and point compasses the wrong way because he is a dick.

When he gets really imaginative he amplifies his power and reverses the Earth's magnetic poles. He's done this twice.

A character that's been around as long as Magneto will have on record a bewildering array of powers, ways of using those powers and apparent genius in many fields. Such is the life of a long-standing super-villain written by hundreds of different people.

Magneto apparently has the power to break newtonian physics because I've seen the guy float in mid air and draw tons of shit towards himself but somehow he stays perfectly in place.

He wants to cause as much destruction as possible and kill a whole lot of people. The implication in the comics is that he's killed untold tens of thousands (minimum) each time*. But events like this are kept on the down low in comics, or he'd be a complete monster the readers wouldn't sympathize with anymore. And that's ignoring the fact he does things like this on the big and small scale through his super-villain career. That's why it's jarring whenever he joins the X-men.

    * when he did it in Alan Davis run there were panels showing things like electronics dying in hospitals, airplanes mid-flight etc.

edit: This isn't new with Magneto, either. One of the earliest depictions had him steal a Soviet nuclear sub to use it as a weapon to destroy America or something. That guy wants to kill people by the truckload.

but instead of doing that, he reverses the polarity of earth's magnetic field.

Also I think it's patently ridiculous for most laypeople to pretend they can trivially discuss what would happen if something crazy happened in the physical world. You may be a decently attentive amateur student of physics but 'sunspots? any schoolboy could tell you they'd lead to a BILAYERED magnetic pulse that would only interfere with directional tools that employ modern digital references...'

It makes me laffo every time because while I'm sure Garth Ennis isn't a talented engineer or physicist, I'm equally sure most of my friends aren't either

reversal of the earth's magnetic field is a thing that happens regularly (or every now and then instead of regularly? I can't remember)
