Always thought the purpose of an allowance is to teach children to be responsible for themselves, a lesson they would learn much quicker if they did not have an allowance. Or anything they did not earn.

It seems like you're willfully misconstruing what they're saying. Tying their allowance to responsibilities (e.g. chores, practice, or any beneficial activity that they might consider tedious) not only gives them incentive to work, it also helps foster financial understanding and good work habits. Simply providing an allowance doesn't really teach them anything. Maybe it's just me, but I'm teaching my daughter about interest rates, borrowing, saving, fees, and investing, wherein I'm the bank that collects fees and interest, or pays out interest. I'd rather her learn the hard way from me with a safety net, than the hard way from a bank later, when the only safety net is bankruptcy.

Of course they are not responsible. Kids in the third world earn nothing and all just sit around starving to death.

Allowance is a blanket term. I got an "allowance" for doing extra chores (in addition to chores that were assigned), and could earn more by doing more. I learned a lot about the value of money and started measuring how expensive video games were in terms of "lawns mowed" ($5) and "guinea pig cages cleaned" ($3, but my sister payed me an additional $5 to clean her guinea pig's cage). It's a useful lesson later in life when I have an actual job and can measure how much lunch costs in terms of browsing Reddit at work slinging code.

It's funny you should bring this up. I've found that some of the hardest working, most responsible people are those from the third world who are given the opportunity to move to another country where their hard work will keep them fed and keep a roof over their head.

I gauged my allowance in terms of X-Men action figures. Which explains why I have so much crap in the closet that holds my childhood toys.
Reminds me of a comment I saw one guy make once about his son asking him for $100 so he could take his girl out on a date, and the Dad says no because his son needs to learn the value of a dollar or how to manage his finances or some such shit, and my response was "Well it's YOUR job to teach him this stuff, so lend it to him with an agreement on how to pay you back."

The faces in panel 3 are incredibly well done.

Well, how else are they gonna learn to be family men?
