Page fault in non-paged area BSOD

My mother, God bless her, got the first crash on my desktop in years. I tried to start it

Error names were:
Page fault in non-paged area
ATTEMPTED WRITE TO READONLY MEMORY

It appears I have to screw around and disable some things and repair a driver.

Blue Screen View could help you narrow down which driver is giving you trouble.

Can you throw it into safe mode?

Yeah, networked too. Tried decreasing the paging file but now it crashes on start up.

    Gonna download what you said.

This was the crash from this morning.

Each one after that had ntoskrnl.exe involved.

The next had that and Ntfs.sys alone, the next one ntoskrnl.exe alone, and the last one ntoskrnl.exe and Ntfs.sys.

    Edit:
And now it crashes in safe mode

not 100% of the time, but I've seen this error related to bad ram. You can try running memtest86, or you can also just cycle through running one stick of ram at a time in the machine to see if it crashes.

I've also seen similar behavior from a bad PSU. Opened it up and saw a cap that was leaking, so at least the diagnosis was easy.

Shop said memory, so points to wunderbar. Still hoping the checks of my hard drives come back clean.

the hard dives will probably be ok. those errors just mean the OS crashes becuase it's trying to write to a bad chunk of ram. That shouldn't affect the hard drives.

(most of the time, anything is possible, et al.)

Its just that they are both several years old and its the one thing I feared.

Now to scour the internet for DDR2 DIMM Ramm (I said it was old).

Depending on what you need, Amazon has it pretty cheap.
