What Spider is this Spider?

TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu PIGEONRegistered User regular
Here is a spider I trapped in my apartment in San Diego. (It's still trapped so I can get a better picture if needed.) Normally I'm too scared of spiders to bother and also I don't give a shit, but this one's a spider I've never seen before and all the "what bug is X" posts lately have fired up my curiosity. I thought it might be Obi-Wan Kenobi but I'm not sure.

God dammit Tycho do you live in a rotting shack in the middle of the woods or something?

Anyway that's probably a spider in the family Theridiidae, which does include widows, although this one is probably a harmless Cobweb Spider in the genus Steatoda but also don't quote me on that because I only have a degree in insects, not arachnids proper.

I never even knew there was such a thing as a "brown widow" until this thread! Luckily wikipedia suggests it's not as dangerous as its more famous spiderbro.

I live in a perfectly nice apartment!

On closer inspection I'm pretty sure it was a brown widow. A friend came over and she insisted on getting rid of it, so I'm safe... for now.

A good indicator that this is probably an ARG.

    It really is now. Thanks.

Also, two stools and a chair at the kitchen counter... but the chair doesn't match the other chairs.
