[No Man's Sky] Your Universe Awaits, and wants you to pick up some stuff on the way
god damn it i just cannot decide if i want this game or not
Are you suffering from a lack of totally rad seamless flight from space to surface and vice versa
Cause if you are, this game will cure what ails you
This. This right here. Being able to do that in a game is something I've roughly since the first time I played any sort of space flight sim. Combine that and the fact that one of my favourite things to do in Minecraft was just to explore further and further out to see what landscapes/biomes I would find and even if everything else about this game is barebones (and it sounds like it might not be) NMS will still scratch both of those itches.
Yeah, I don't actually love the thought of this being a survival game, but it's literally the only game I can play on my couch that involves exploratory space flight(in three dimensions, I'm looking at you Rebel Galaxy). They're so rare, I have to try them when I can.
One thing I'm not really clear on: the game technically has multiplayer, but the devs are saying that running into other players is unlikely, right? But isn't the overall goal of the game to reach the center of the galaxy? Wouldn't that result in all the end game players being gathered in a relatively small area, making it actually potentially possible to seek out other players?

You're probably not going to the direct center of the galaxy (which, if it's anything like our galaxy, has a supermassive black hole in it) instead going to the inner rim, which would still be like millions of stars.

Still a much more manageable size than the entire galaxy. I'm just wondering if there's anything, besides time, stopping players from saying "let's meet up at space station XYZ".

"Relatively small" is still a pretty large area when you're trying to find a single individual somewhere in an entire solar system
That said, as far as I know (having only casually consumed information about the game), you can meet up, it's just limited to only a few people in your session at a time
Okay I cracked and watched the entire 25 minute gameplay video, figured it wouldn't hurt anything and it didn't, by the end of it the guy had not even left the starting planet
I am significantly more excited about this than I've ever been, that settled nearly all of my worries about the game
Exploring the planets and gathering resources looks fascinating and fun, the systems all work together in really interesting and neat ways, and there's some really smart design things going on with the interface
What I will warn people about, though this doesn't bother me, that at least at the very start of the game, No Man's Sky is Gear Degradation: The Video Game
Your stuff doesn't BREAK, but it does run out of charge and you have to spend some of your resources to recharge it, this includes your weather protection, your oxygen, your weapon, and your mining laser
In 25 minutes of gameplay the guy had to recharge all his stuff 3 or 4 times each
You will almost certainly be able to upgrade your stuff so it holds a longer charge, but at least at the start of the game you will be running out of charge all the time
Having to recharge yer batteries is like, space 101
+1

Welp, I guess it's time to trade in my 360 that is just sitting there collecting dust and pick this up for PC. I might get $20 for it! WOOOOOHOOOOO!

That's the interesting part, I believe Sean has stated that everyone starts in the same galaxy, although there are also other galaxies. Rough estimates people have made based on assuming similar size and planet/star ratios to the milky way and given the 18 quintillion planet number would put the number of galaxies at 10-100million+

I have had this game preordered since I was able to.
It is like a game that was designed for me personally.
This is the game that I would have designed if you had asked Wee Metzger to design a game (either this or Procedurally Generated Pirate RPG) and I will play this giddily even if it's only 10% as rad as I'm hoping.
"BUH WHAT IF IT'S BORING" FUCK YOU I'VE PLAYED EVE ONLINE AND LOVED IT YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BORING GAMES
Even if you meet another player, you won't immediately know it, right? Like, they won't even have nameplates
Seeing another player is the only way you'll find out what "you" look like, cause they'll be the same thing
It will also probably be pretty obvious cause they'll be the thing that looks like someone playing a video game is controlling them
are you suggesting this procedural engine is incapable of generating armoured humanoid figures who repeatedly jump across wide tracts of terrain while facing backwards, sporadically pausing to crouch or blast their lasers wildly into the sky?
It does seem weird of Sony to freak out about spoilers given that the other players supposedly will never see the spoiled planets.

It's not about the spoilers or anything it's about the fact that it's not officially released. It's just effectively an NDA in place for any non-official footage, it's all about not disrupting their launch cadence and not getting in the way of press coverage they have set up.
The guy's videos also went up before Sean Murray made his statement that hey you shouldn't watch that stuff
And now he has said he won't make any more videos in deference to Hello Games, he'll just take a handful of screenshots and write some stuff up
Speaking of, an update from that guy that still doesn't seem super spoilery, though we're getting there
- The planets almost always have some degree of life, although some are more plentiful than others. I have yet to encounter a planet quite as teeming with life as some of the ones shown in the trailer / demo vids. Maybe as I get closer to the center? Time will tell. Whenever you land on a planet, it gives you metrics on the Flora and Fauna, anywhere from "Yeah there's a shit ton!" to "None" and even on the "None" planets, I've found life - so I'm pretty sure it may be actually impossible for a planet to be 100% bone dry on life.
- The planets are pretty big. Sometimes annoyingly big. It's actually faster to fly up in to orbit to circle around a planet to get to POIs than it is to fly at surface level (as you have maximum speeds and semi-orbit is 10x the max as surface level) which feels a little weird sometimes while playing.
- I'm pretty sure this game is 60FPS but I could be wrong, is there a definitive way to check? I haven't experienced frame loss at all while playing.
- The trophy list isn't actually "turned on" in the trophy section yet. I do earn trophies - they pop up like normal - but when I go to try and view them in my trophy list, nothing appears.
- The clouds are not procedural, at least not yet, but I think this is because it's just a placeholder. As you approach and enter planets etc they go through shifts in display representing distance, and at maximum distance you're viewing the outer most "layer" IE: the cloud layer and this doesn't seem to change. Maybe they just didn't want to bother making those layers procedural? I don't know.
He also apparently has almost "finished" the game, getting 80% of the way to the center of the galaxy in about 20 hours of play, mostly because of some kind of mechanic that allows you to jump waaaaaay ahead that he has said he thinks they should remove from the game

Dammit this is the thing I was worried about the most, for 2 reasons.
1. I was hoping it'd take a long time to get there.
2. Even if #1 was true, I'm sure there would be people racing to get there ASAP and then proceed to spoil what's there. With it not taking very long to get there, that'll happen much sooner than expected. So it's either.. do I rush to the center as well to preserve the mystery, or play as I would prefer but basically stay off the internet. Urgh

To be fair, dude is trying to get there as fast as he possibly can, exploiting a mechanic that just rockets you along
I can tell you for certain I won't be doing that sort of thing myself, so I could easily see it taking twice that, and that's what this guy says too

I mean, is the mechanic hyperdrive? cause yeah, that's what it does. I do get the feeling that rushing to the center might leave you underprepared, however

No, it looks like there are things called "Atlas Stones" that when you use them, they just straight-up teleport you
There is also the very real probability that there is more than one galaxy in the game, as he was identified as being in the Euclid Galaxy when he first started. I wouldn't be too worried.
good lord does he just not read his damn tooltips or what
From what I've seen it's pretty common for streamers to miss tooltips. I've seen Giant Bomb and Jim Sterling both do it.
You're not just playing a game when streaming or recording a video, you're also essentially performing to an audience. You're trying to avoid large gaps of silence and keep the conversation rolling if there's more than one of you. It's very easy to miss or not process stuff when you do that.

see now I feel justified not watching streamers. if I want to see someone play a game badly and not shut up I can take a bunch of coke and put a mirror by the tv
I'm fine with streamers missing info if it's something that they're making purely for entertainment value, like the Achievement Hunter guys. Yeah, they're terrible and miss stuff but they're just making funny let's plays, so who cares.
It's when something is trying to posit itself as somewhat informative, like a quick look, that that kind of stuff really bothers me. Just scads of misinformation and half-remembered things that could be easily remedied by playing the game for ten minutes before recording. People trying to explain game mechanics while constantly failing at those mechanics is frustrating.

My daughter likes some Minecraft streamers and I can't even stand to be in the same room if she's watching. "Why don't they EVER stop talking?" I get not wanting *large* gaps of silence but a continuous speech assault is too far in the other direction IMO. And don't get me started on the apparent requirement of a 'funny' voice.
So the way the dude got to the center so fast is he found an exploit to just constantly farm warp drive fuel, which sounds like 0 fun at all, so the game ain't this short

he's claiming that it's not an exploit, just that there's an item you start finding in the mid-game that's worth several times more than rare resources had been until then
There's been a lot of rending of garments over the guy saying that there's not a huge amount of animal variation, too
There's like 10-15 types of animals and then a bajillion permutations of each
You're gonna see a lot lot lot of things running around on 4 legs with slight differences, like one will have a turtle shell and one will have a fox tail
People are also upset that all the planets have at least a little bit of life, he didn't find anything that was absolutely barren, nor did he find anything that looked like any of the planets in the trailers that was a glittering paradise, or anything with like, hugely different kinds of landscape

Wait, Gamefly is still a thing? I feel like I haven't heard about it in forever
I put Resident Evil 5 at the top of my queue and a few other things after it, with Star Wars Battlefront pretty far down as an "eh maybe one day"
The first game they sent me: Battlefront
I am comfortable never using this service ever again
Yep
It's how I played Uncharted 4, too
And most of the PS4 games I've played, honestly
That's cool--I always thought that was a neat idea, especially having grown up in a small town where you couldn't just buy or rent games locally.

It was actually taken down like 4 times and I kept replacing it with mirrors
