But I mostly noticed how the editing and scene transitions were very Eva inspired.
I'M NOT FINISHED WITH YOU!!!

It's always hilarious when people eventually realize all the religious stuff in Eva was just Anno pulling things out of his ass to make the show unique.
I always interpreted it as SELEE attributing divine provenance to merely obscenely powerful alien forces personally
Also ending spoilers
Desperate all or nothing bid to defeat invincible monster as it just squats in the middle of town and powers up to annihilate everything is the exact plot of an Eva episode and the climax of the first movie
My jaw actually dropped at the atomic breath just engulfing Tokyo in flames. Larval Godzilla was kind of goofy looking, but in a way that actually made it even creepier, especially the way it moved.

Yeah, that...that big ol drum is clear enough for even me to pick it out.

It's even funnier with how that's the aspect later works mimic to look "deep", while the actual meat of the story is largely ignored.
It's ignoring the food and eating the fake grapes in the lobby.
i blanked on it being by the dude who made EVA until the credits started, though that probably explains some of the, "that seems familiar" moments. i deliberately went in knowing very little
so that first form was a bit baffling -- is Godzilla gonna eat this freaky thing?
one of the things we really liked was how the emphasis on formality, channels and bureaucracy all speak to Japanese culture and government. like, it is a kind of procedural, but though there is a lot of telling/talking, it is actually showing an omnipresent mentality rather than simply acting as exposition. a signifier. like the bit with the American wanting to dispense with honorifics; the younger, less hidebound ministers and scientists signalling towards a change -- "Do as you like." the old ways are holding the country back.
lot of gut-punches, too. not an earthquake or a tsunami. post-war is forever.
i think Godzilla still represents the nuclear terror, but this movie approaches it with familiarity, now. it is still horrible, but it can be overcome by working together. pride in the nation and a surprisingly hopeful globalistic thread, too.

Since I can't watch Shin Godzilla for the foreseeable future, I decided to watch the next best thing... 1954's Gojira!
yo that movie totally holds up. The image is too dark, but what you can see is rad. There are some really excellent composite shots of people running in the background while a giant Godzilla foot stomps in the foreground. There were some goofy miniature shots though - the firetruck crashing was pretty laughable.
Also, was surprised to hear Godzilla didn't have his iconic roar yet. It was a different (still very scary) one.
Play of the game goes to the radio guy who accepted his imminent death in a very matter of fact way. This is the end, folks. Sayonara.

The bit that always gets me is the mother and her daughter who says " we'll see daddy soon" and then they die.

Yeah. He just went "The story of the century: Godzilla! And he's looking this way! Are we fucked? It looks like we're fucked! We are now totally fucked, with nothing we can do!"
But the war widow bit is the most brutal. The film's quite good at building up tension for Serizawa to use his device, while making it understandable why he wants no part of it.
I get so many odd looks when I recommend Gojira as a legit "You really should see this movie" film along with Casablanca. Those two films inform so much about World War 2 and the ramifications of it across the world.

I haven't watched the American version since I was wee, but little kid me loved it.
Course, little kid me also watched Godzilla vs The Sea Monster so often that I still have that movie nearly memorized, so the fuck did he know?
+1

Godzilla vs the Sea Monster was my first Godzilla movie, and while I loved it when I was 3, it does NOT hold up.

The American version, Godzilla: King Of the Monsters, isn't terrible; it downplays the anti-American angle a little bit, but for most of it the only change is that one american guy who coincidentally knows everyone involved.

Just saw this at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco while here on a work trip.
It was awesome.
That is all.
edit: Also, I saw it with my boss, who, once we arrived at the theater, said, "Oh yeah this is where I saw the original Godzilla movie for the first time years ago."

pretty interesting and potentially awesome choice, if it turns out to be true

I have pretty vivid memories of renting it and Nausica and the Valley of the Wind on the same day when I was 4 or 5.
