The actual Biolante design is probably the best design they have done for a monster since Gigan. It's fucking badass as fuck.
This Anguirus concept art stands out for a neat reason.
Back when Anguirus was first created for Godzilla Raids Again, his maquette featured his carapace peeled back in two pieces. This was actually mean to illustrate how the shell would be moved to allow the suit actor entrance, but photographs of the maquette were used for several promotional images, giving the impression that Anguirus' shell was actually supposed to be like that.
This concept art seems to imply that the peeled-off looking shell sections from the maquette were going to be incorporated into an actual version of the monster.
The accompanying two pieces of artwork are very, very odd though.
Like, what the hell is going on here? Anguirus is a lobster? The shell sections are his wings? What?
There is an unpublished Godzilla novel that I want to read so bad
It has a new continent rise from the Pacific Ocean and a bunch of nations go to claim it only to find it's already been staked out by Battra, Varan, Manda and a mystery monster that was never revealed, leading to Godzilla getting involved when the mystery monster raises hell.
Literally?
Maybe!!!
WE'LL NEVER KNOW
The godzilla series included godzilla returns godzilla 2000 godzilla at world's end godzilla versus the robot monsters.
The last one is godzilla and the lost continent. They had cover art and everything
Oh my God all this concept art is so interesting. If Toho were to put all this in a book I would work however many hours of overtime I'd need to pay the undoubtedly outrageous price.
Looks like Ghidorah was originally going to have forelimbs instead of legs. Not quite as imposing as the towering creature he became, but might be neat for a variant in the vein of Desghidorah and Keizer Ghidorah.
Rodan was a giant Archaeopteryx. Odd.
One Space Godzilla concept appears to feature Biollante, Ghidorah, Mothra and Battra forms, as well as a bizarrely alien figure. Perhaps it was a shapeshifting doppelganger?
These Space Godzilla's scream "Ultraman villain" to me.

Oh god that Rose Biollante form is terrifying.

Would the shapeshifter possibly have been Bagan?

Was Bagan ever meant to show up outside of Super Godzilla?
Man I loved that game.

Bagan was supposed to be in like three different Heisei films at various points I think. Like I wanna say they even made a costume of it.

Dang, that's to bad.
The game does a damn good job at selling him as bad fucking news.

I think he was initially proposed for a version of The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs Biollante, and to have Battra's role in Godzilla vs Mothra. I think.

There's a ton of Bagan concept art at the link I provided earlier. A few of the designs look similar to the final one used in Super Godzilla, but most are wildly different.
It's my understanding that the iteration of Bagan meant to fight Godzilla originally was a composite of three creatures that could combine. The later idea for Bagan as a Mothra opponent has a piece of concept art using a design similar to the Super Godzilla one.
Speaking of Super Godzilla, what if that ridiculousness had been featured in a movie? It looks kinda like a Space Godzilla without crystals, but even bulkier. Why would a dinosaur even mutate into that thing?
"YOU CAN'T SKIP DELTS. THAT'S WHERE THE POWER IS."
I can't figure out what the artist was trying to do with the shoulders. They must have decided giant delts wasn't enough and proceeded to invent several new muscles.
That article on the last page about Godzilla '14 reminded me of my favorite thing from that movie
The way it expertly sells the idea of Godzilla being like, old when the world was young
When Godzilla shows up, the tide follows; in just about every scene he appears his presence is announced by some kind of flooding. It's like a reminder that Godzilla is Earth's Champion, nature is on Godzilla's side
The best scene for it, though, is the Golden Gate Bridge scene

I love that movie!
I do think it's a little self indulgent though.
I'm really excited for the new Kong, and knowing that it's set in the same world as Godzilla makes me sooo happy.
King Kong was Peter Jackson's last good movie. I fear it will also be the last good Peter Jackson movie.
as bad as the Hobbit trilogy is as a whole, i'm fairly certain a great editor will one day chisel it down into the single 3 hour movie it always should've been and it'll be pretty watchable
but until then, though, yeah

I've seen a four hour edit and a three hour edit. And it starts so swimmingly. But once you get into the back half of film two, I just don't think there is any saving it. There are problems with those films way beyond bloat.

Has anyone chopped The Hobbit trilogy down into one movie yet? Seems overdue.
I've made it through two. But there are like four or five I think. And I dunno. Devoting six hours in theaters to the first two films plus another seven to re-edited versions is as much punishment as I'm willing to take.

i admittedly haven't seen the movies since they were in theaters, but i feel like from what i remember the back half of the second was almost entirely bloat (like, what felt like 40 minutes of Smaug chasing the dwarves around the mountain and nothing else), and about 80% of the third could be excised and you'd lose nothing in the narrative
i do agree that the movies have more issues than just bloat, which is partially why i said i bet it'd be watchable, not good

Oh yeah. It's definitely a drastic improvement. But it's still maybe a C- at best. Because the finale of it is just guaranteed to be utter dreck.

Do you know the Biollante's origin story? Because that's basically Biollante's origin story.

A detail I love about the third one is that the leaves on its back are arrayed and roughly shaped like Godzilla's dorsal spines.

It features a three way fight with godzilla mecha king gidorah mechagodzilla and MOGURA.
SO YEAH IT'S BALLER AS FUCK
You aren't kidding.
That looks almost nothing like what they finally went with.
Why I fear the ocean.

There's pandemonium; kids screaming, adults screaming, dogs barking, birds squawking
And then Godzilla roars
And every living thing falls silent
It's like everything that ever lived has an instinct: when Gojira speaks, you listen
Seriously just give me a Gareth Edwards nature documentary of Monster Island. It would easily be my favorite movie.
Just a tense black & white hodpodge of scenes
If they were black and white they had to be Gojira or Godzilla Raids Again!
Wasn't there a faux documentary about Skull Island back when the Jackson King Kong came out? I know there was an artbook with that theme...
I know there was an artbook.
But if there was a faux documentary I totally missed it and I need to seek that out.
