I do not understand how anyone can pretend to think the media is out to get Trump and playing soft with Hillary, especially after last night's debate. What a farce. I only watched some highlights, but good fucking grief.

I very nearly got into an argument with my hilariously anti-Clinton parents last night. I told them I couldn't vote for Trump. And my Dad get all red in the face and started twitching.
"Do you really think Hillary would be any better!?"

And then he started with the anti-hillary spiel.

Mom said something about her having had people killed and the Benghazi thing.

How are you going to vote for, son?

    I'm writing in Harambe.

The answer to "Do you really think Hillary would be any better!?" should always be a resounding, immediate and confident "yes". Because regardless of if you think she will be a president you agree with, there is no question that she would be better than the cartoon character that's running against her.

I know you don't mean that seriously, but the idea of people actually doing that out of spite, taking away votes that could be used to keep Trump out of office, infuriates me.

"How are you going to vote, son?"

    "my conscience"

    "and that is?"

I'm not really in position to have a political argument with my parents. I'm living at their home while my divorce is pending. My mother is under a lot of stress, from my divorce and my Dad's poor health.

Surprisingly positive* coverage of the Dakota Access Pipeline in the Washington Post.

Really gets into the cultural/historical reasons behind the anger, instead of minimizing and handwaving it. Much appreciated.

Also the first mainstream article I've seen that points this out:
That river is the source of water for the reservation’s 8,000 residents. Any leak, tribal leaders argue, would cause immediate and irreparable harm. And tribal leaders point to what they consider a double standard, saying that the pipeline was originally going to cross the Missouri north of Bismarck, the state capital, but was rerouted because of powerful opposition that did not want a threat to the water supply there.

*Surprising in that this is the same paper that polled a few self-identified Indians in the D.C. area about if the Washington football team's name was offensive, got mostly nos, and ran it as proof the name shouldn't be changed.

Remember when he used to get lost somewhere in the world and everyone would have to find him?
Where in the world is Matt Lauer!

This is how I always think of him. A shitty Carmen Sandiego knockoff on Good Morning America.

And there will be leaks. It's inevitable. There was a big one with the pipeline just outside my hometown, like, a month ago.

I'm totally down with that 50 Most Beautiful list

Largely because it is willing to include men as well as women

I'm gonna get some friends together and play hot or not with it later

First you gotta say whether you'd go for it, and then you read what their political affiliation is and see if you regret it

To be honest I don't expect a political leader to necessarily have the detailed information right there in their head about every global crisis hotspot. If he doesn't know the recent specific disposition of ISIS forces then, hey, okay.

What I actually prefer is someone who can gather information, assess the matter with expert input from advisors, devise clear policy following this and then enact it coherently and firmly, while keeping an awareness that it may need to change.

You get this especially on military policy. Someone I saw online was saying that Clinton never served, how can she effectively deploy a military? Well, she doesn't pick what tanks to use, guys. She has experts to do that.

If you had to be a personal expert in everything you oversaw, literally no one would be qualified for any serious office.

So this state has a budget shortfall for the year of at least 150m and has no idea how to fix that
One of the ways suggested was raising the liquor tax by a .25 so a shot of whiskey would cost a quarter more and a six pack $1.50 more
The positive spin they gave to it was it would combat the state's DUI, alcoholic, and other liquor problems :rotate:

    Another school shooting

Conflicting reports now. One person dead (apparently the shooter), one injured, possibly two shooters on the loose.

Gonna be a while before this gets sorted out I'm sure.

  • BroloBrolo Broseidon Lord of the BroceanRegistered User regular
very unlikely that there's more than one shooter

Maybe I'll exercise my right to affect ratings by no longer watching the Today Show. Now, if I were a Nielsen family household, I would be encouraged not to talk about that. But I haven't seen anything saying that I can't talk about not not being a Nielsen family household!

No, but for real, I'm gonna stop giving them the ratings.

Are Nielsen families still a thing?

I would have thought they could get much more accurate ratings via digital cable, internet streams, and on-demand data or whathaveyou. I guess some savages still use OTA antennae.

They also track video game console and computer use time. It's all based on audio signals, actually. And I have Comcast. My PC is only tracked as "in-use" because it's owned by my employer, so no content tracking for me on that.

    That I know of. :surprised:

That would mean that our advertising driven media would have to change how they do things, get new metrics, and start paying attention to the poor and disenfranchised who still have cable television.
And we can't have that, because then poor people will be seen as people deserving of consideration and respect.

you know, saying that sentiment publicly, turning that into a hashtag or whatever?

might actually get the attention of the news network. Which I think would be a good thing.

It seems like, to a certain group of press people, if you side with Clinton, then you're being biased. If you side with Trump, then it's neutral.

I'm confused and frustrated with the media rolling over for Trump.
