Neighbor's dog sprayed by skunk

Hey all,

A couple of days ago I woke up to the worst smell I had ever experienced - my neighbor's dog was sprayed by a skunk. We live in an apartment building and they're across the hall. Since then the smell has subsided, but every once in a while I can smell it in my place. The dog never enters into my apartment, but I am worried about the smell getting into my furniture. Is that a realistic possibility considering he got sprayed outside and never had physical contact with me or the inside of my apartment?

If so, what should I do... I'm hoping that nothing in my place permenantly smells of skunk.

I'm fairly positive the smell won't linger on your stuff unless you're coming into direct contact with the object that's been sprayed and get the stuff on you or your things.

You can abate the smell with candles and air filters I imagine.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

Yeah, hit it with some fabreeze, or use those plug-in oil warmer things if you feel like the smell is lingering. Your stuff should be fine.

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Thanks all! That's a relief. I think I'm paranoid because this is my first apartment on my own. Definitely keeping keeping candles and similar things on hand.

Yes and no on that. Not being in direct contact with the dog definitely helps, but we had an issue with a skunk blasting something right in front of our house. The smell was so powerful and pervasive that we were still finding jackets and similar that smelled like skunk in the closets closest to that area 6+ months later.

That said, the worst of the smell faded fairly quickly, the last lingering remnants were totally gone within a few months, and clothing items that did retain that stink were fine after washing once or twice. Nothing was permanent, and the blasting seemingly occurred about a foot from our front door.

Oh no, thankfully it happened farther away. So far it seems to have mostly gone away, it can be sensed rarely in the hall.

i got to deal with this last night. skunk nailed our dog in our backyard. fortunately i saw it happen and washed her before she went into the house, though i tracked a bit in.

she still smells a bit but i got rid of most of it

Yeah with time it will go away. Try to let sunlight in. And I would say keep the windows open... But the skunk may spray again and it will come in through the window.

If the smell comes and goes, check your air filters. Depending on the AC type you may be able to just wash them. Hope it goes well!
