I'm kind of unexpectedly floored by this. Dude had a lot of critics for his predictable writing style, but I still found him quite inspiring, especially when he introduced Overwatch to the public at Blizzcon. Here's part 1 of the great Gamespot documentary (done by one Danny O'Dwyer).

Chris Metzen seems like a cool dude, and he was involved in a lot of my favorite stuff from Blizzard story-wise
but he was also heavily involved in some of my least favorite stuff story wise from Blizzard, a lot of which contradicted previous stuff he did which I really liked!
So I don't know exactly how to feel about this. I hope Chris all the best and he seems happy and I'm happy for him, but I wonder how the Blizzard lore stuff is going to proceed from now on without him, for better or for worse, it's hard to know.

Don't worry guys, I'm sure after another game he'll be redeemed but with superpowers.

metzen is not a very good writer but he is kind of the originator of a lot of what makes Blizzard art so identifiable, and he seemed like a dude who just really wanted to make cool shit for people to have fun with
I hope he has a fulfilling retirement, dude's earned it
Dude's like younger than 40
Why are you guys talking like he's gonna go somewhere faraway
I hope there will be a diablo reboot, the first one was pretty good
because he says he's not making any more games, dude
I apologize if i sounded rude and i also facted check that he's 42 now not under 40. But that's still a really young age to tell people that you are retiring for good, so I really doubt that this will be the last you see of Metzen in video games
He says he wants to spend time with his family, which is a pretty solid reason for getting out of games development. I wouldn't...be stunned if he started up a project years down the line, but I mean, he's made his money, and he says he's done. I'm prepared to take him at his word
man im glad you posted those pictures because I forgot that Metzen was the one who drew them
the Warcraft 2 manual belongs in the Smithsonian or something. in fact, everything to do with warcraft 2 belongs there. extremely influential game in my life.
Can I still blame him specifically when Blizzard stories aren't to my liking?
Yes.
Because it will be his influence warping the new writers from beyond space and time. Twisting them, warping them, tainting their every effort to be better.
That was the plot of StarCraft II, right? Or was that WarCraft III?

Old-school Blizzard had amazing manuals

we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
Like, love him or hate him (I loved him but then kinda grew out of him), dude definitely shaped a whole generation of games.
I wish him success in whatever he ends up getting up to down the road.

When I went to Blizzcon in 2009 he did shake my hand and was in awe of how tall I was
His retirement is a double-edged sword covered in spikes and wreathed in hellfire, because 90s schlock is equally terrible and awesome that way
we're all soldiers now

I'm pretty stoked to see what the person who fills his shoes does for the company

it was all of them
like ya on one hand a little sad, end of an era-ish type feel, but then the cynical side of me kicks in...
" Ya poor guy , retiring under 40 with a scrooge mcduck level of savings to be with his family..."
Wish I could be that sad
