In 138AD, the Emperor of Rome was dying
Hadrian, builder of walls and divine cults to dead lovers, was succumbing to congestive heart failure, and if he died...there was a surprisingly comprehensive succession plan in effect.
Being gay, Hadrian never had kids, so he had to do what Trajan and Nerva did: Adopt someone as his heir. So he chose the pretty bland 50 year old Titus Fulvus Antoninus to be his heir.
The twist is Antoninus also had to adopt a seventeen year old boy called Marcus Annius Verrus. This leads some people to think Hadrian really wanted Marcus to succeed him, but the lessons of Caligula and Nero showed that youth and power mixed badly. So let Antoninus be emperor for a decade and let Marcus grow up.
And this plan pretty much played out as expected, except that Antoninus lived into his seventies, meaning Marcus didn't become emperor until he was 40. Not that he was terrible with that lost decade. But still, Hadrian's plan was honored, with the only twist that the now Emperor Marcus Aurelius also had his adoptive brother Lucius be declared Co-Emperor, the first official time this was done, but far from the last. And Antoninus and Marcus were great emperors, so Hadrian made a good call!
Contrast to Marcus Aurelius' decision to invest his not-adoptive son Commodus with the succession and how Commodus was pretty awful. Youth plus power: Not even once.
