The Dark Tower is a seven-book series (plus a short story, plus a spinoff novel, plus some comics, plus technically most of Stephen King's other work) about Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger in a world that has "moved on." Roland seeks the Dark Tower, the linchpin of reality, the center that holds all the myriad worlds and realms of the cosmos (and King's stories) together. He is joined in his quest by his ka-tet, a band of companions drawn from various time periods of a world very much like ours. He is opposed by the Crimson King and his servant, a mysterious Man in Black of many names, some of which may be familiar to longtime King readers.

the-dark-tower-idris-elba.jpg?itok=CpApPrLa

A film adaptation of the series, starring Idris Elba as Roland and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black, is set for release in February 2017, and a planned 2018 TV series based on the fourth book, Wizard and Glass, which is mostly a big flashback to Roland's younger days.

As I've alluded, the series is notable for being King's magnum opus, connecting many of his other works into a single fictional multiverse, via everything existing on different levels of the Tower. Characters from The Stand, It, Salem's Lot and many others make appearances in various major and minor roles.

Commala-come-come,
The battle’s now begun!
And all the foes of men and rose
Rise with the setting sun.

The only King I've read is The Stand, as horror is generally not my jam

I feel like I should give this a shot though because that description sounds 200% rad

I really want to read the books before this comes out. I should get started.

Well the first book is also the first book that King ever wrote.

So it's unlikely that you'll see any interconnectivity there.

he did revise it in 2003 and add roughly 35 pages of stuff

but looking this up has revealed that I didn't know he even published it back in the 80s, I thought the whole "first book he wrote" thing was just a bit of trivia, like he'd never released it

I thiiiiiiiink the framing story of book 4 is probably where that takes off
Though there may start being smaller hints here and there in 3

It was originally serialised in a SF magazine before it was published separately.

I've got my dad's original copy of the gunslinger and the revised version released before book 5 and the differences are really minor but make a big change to the readability

I can genuinely recommend that if you didn't like the first book, just skip it and go to the 2nd. Once you're in the second everything gets so much better.

I liked reading the first version of book one first and then finding out only after finishing the series that there was an updated version, so I had to go back and reread it

The Stand is probably my favorite SK book, I've got the like, 20th anniversary or something version that has like, 500 more pages

because that's what the book needs, more of it.

The style of The Gunslinger is radically different from the rest of the series. You may as well read The Drawing of the Three, then read The Gunslinger and think of it as a flashback to "how we got where we are." Because you kind of need to know what happens in the first book to appreciate a major portion of the third.

The Gunslinger was the first adult book I read, when I was like 10 or 11, so I'll always have a soft spot for it despite the rough edges. Picked up a used paperback at a church thrift store because I used to watch the shit out of those old King ABC miniseries, and hey this one has a cowboy, how cool is that? Not the easiest book to get into, but it really resonated with me and started my whole obsession with post-apocalyptic settings. It also has one of the best opening lines ever.

A few years later King was speaking at the Miami international book fair, so my friend and I went to see him. When it got around to Q&A time, he flat out said he wouldn't be answering DT questions, and watching all these people slowly lowering their hands was pretty funny.

A big climactic moment in Gunslinger fell completely flat for me because of the way King wrote the dialogue
This 13 year old kid suddenly talks like a grizzled narrator?

"Go then, there are other worlds than these"

Where the fuck did that come from, kid

I read these in high school

The library only had the first few, but my math teacher had all of them, and she'd lend them to me while we talked about how cool they were

That's one of those moments where it kind of hits you in the face that King was nineteen when he wrote it.

I just read something about the movie that I didn't know. It's not really a spoiler, but it's cool enough to put in a spoiler for anyone that doesn't want to know anything. It's something King has tweeted about. I wouldn't read it if you haven't read the books but plan to.
It's a sequel to the books. He has The Horn.

So they're pulling a Rebuild of Evangelism on us eh

  • FawstFawst The road to awe.Registered User regular
Yeah, the whole thing about the movies is that they can get away with
adapting it nearly any way they really want to and can say "this is a sequel, things have moved on."

I'm totally OK with it so long as it's not an excuse for a poor movie. That leaked trailer was cool to see, but at the same time, it is not what I had in mind when they said they were doing The Gunslinger. Then again, that's not even the title of the movie, so my point is invalid!

I'm liking The Stand a bunch so far

I'm on 157 so I'm just a little bit over...10% of the way through the book. Yeesh.

Randall hasn't even shown up yet and he's one of the main reasons I decided to read it because I've heard he's such a good villain and also
    ties into The Dark Tower?

so far Frannie and Larry are my favorites.

I'm trying not to get too hype about the movie, although I was already excited about the casting. But the spoiler that Ashcroft mentions? Which

    (big spoilers!!!)
Can account for every discrepancy from the books, which means that this time, this time might be the last journey, that he has the horn and will blow it at the foot of the Dark Tower, in the sea of roses, and it will be a final, final ending and salvation at last

Dark Tower connections are almost never explicitly connected from a non-DT book to the DT series. There are a couple of notable exceptions, but it's almost always DT referencing another King work rather than the other way around.

Also if the movie isn't full of Takuro Spirits and Nozz-a-la cola I'll be so disappointed.

Since the movie's out in like 3 months and they have not announced any casting nor were they in the trailer, it's pretty safe to assume Eddie and Susannah aren't in it

the comics go into this a lot more in depth and talk about what happens to him after, if you're into that!

also the connections tend to be much more dark tower directly referencing his other novels rather than other novels referencing the dark tower directly iirc; it is also fun to watch movie adaptations and play spot the reference, like in The Mist the main character is working on a painting that is Roland at the Tower. and I agree with everyone else that you can always skip book one and go back to it later without any real issues, I found the gunslinger kind of the hardest to get through on my first read

I've been reading the Dark Tower series since July and got started on Wizard & Glass last week. My momentum's kind of slowed down a bit so I'm hoping to remedy that. I'd like to have the series finished by the time the movie comes out.

I just finished the third chapter.

Oh, also, regarding connections to other works...
there's mention of a turtle in the second or third book that I suspect is probably the same turtle that shows up in It.

I think you can go straight from there to "wind through the keyhole" which is essentially just a framing device fit Roland telling stories set in the world, pre-fall. It's got the same feel as w&g
