HP printer seems very confused

hello, hello

who would like to help me fix this stupid printer at work, which initially said it was "offline" but connected (and after my boss removed it from the printer list in an attempt to try to reconnect from scratch, now will not connect to our mac at all)

it's an hp p1102w, connected via usb (but also supposed to be wireless?) to our mac mini running OSx 10.11.6, I've already done everything on the HP website (and we can't call because it's out of warranty) -- here's the curious thing

when it stopped working we started having a weird problem where an error message, "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", pops up periodically. It also pops up if I reboot, disconnect or reconnect the printer/computer. The mac has an external CD thing under "devices" but there is no external cd drive, the mac mini doesn't have a cd drive, there are no cds involved here.

SO, I think ?? that the mac thinks the printer is a cd drive it can't read ?? which is just

?????

Some of these printers will supply drivers through the USB port by pretending to be a USB based CD or flashdrive. The USB connection might be borked.

Have you tried it wirelessly yet?

yeah, I can't get it to connect and the directions for setting it up to connect wirelessly are basically that when you plug in the usb, something should pop up, which it does not

I have not yet totally uninstalled the printer (waiting on boss permission before doing so) though so that may be why

Different cable or different port. Also unplug everything and let it sit for a couple minutes without power.

Did you try resetting the print server on the Mac? It can sometimes fix this stuff.

Go into System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners.
Hold Control and click the list on the left, and choose Reset Printing System.

It'll delete any printers that are listed there, but also release any drivers or anything that are holding in the system.

You can try a new cable to the printer, maybe. Failing that, the printer is a good six years old. Throw it away.

Thats a common issue on Windows based PCs with fucking HP printers, I dont mind the large MFPs they and some of the tech they do is pretty cool but the software for printers is pure shit. Ditch it get a new non HP printer.

we don't have a backup cable, and my boss doesn't want to have to reconnect the other 3 printers attached to the machine. Basically the only situation we could do that in would be after hours when she and I are both here, which doesn't ever happen. I am in the "throw it away" camp, myself, but she won't let us turn the heat on in the store any more to save money so I'm not sure if it'd get replaced and she's not willing to toss it if it's fixable but not willing to have the other printers disconnected during store hours soooo

we don'y have another cable that'd fit, I have tried the usb end in other ports on the mac without luck. I have also already done the unplugging everything.

At some point, perhaps now, the answer is "tell your boss that you can't fix it" and then stop trying because it's the owner's problem to solve.

This. Especially if it's "fix it, but I don't want to spend money."

And unless it's a high end business printer (which this very much is not), there's no reason to fix it. Throw it away.

Then unless you're making 45$ an hour or so, I would tell them they need to contact someone who does tech support, or recommend they throw it away because those things are like 65$ on sale.
