All this talk about Stellaris, Crusader Kings, and Europa Universalis really makes me want a "Parent Mode" where the game can play by itself with light input from you so you can learn the game in fits and starts as your playtime is repeatedly punctuated by random children requests. Unfortunately, I usually don't have the time or mental energy at 10:00 pm to sit through and focus on chapter 1 of a tutorial, only to get back to the game a week or more later where I realize I've forgotten everything I learned last time.

In a way, that's why games I already know by heart (like Civilization 5 and XCOM), or games I can have playing while I'm doing something else (like Future Fight on android) tend to be my jam lately.

    Distant Worlds: Universe!

Unfortunately it has all the glossy graphical charm of an Excel spreadsheet. But it legit does a great job of allowing you to take a step back and have the empire run itself.

edit: Also, I burned through a decent chunk of House of the Dying Sun last night and I have a complaint.

I am in a mission with 1 enemy frigate and 3 enemy destroyers.

    I have 1 frigate and 3 destroyers.

I tell my 1 frigate and 3 destroyers to attack and kill the enemy frigate.

I then expertly kill their fighter escort and execute one of the targets... and the enemy frigate is still at nearly full health and has almost killed one of my destroyers.

Like it is more efficient for me, an interceptor, to eliminate capitals than it is for 4 other capitals to attack them it is wild.

If I had 6 goddamn interceptors I'd finish the fight faster!

Still, it's a bunch of fun! I just wish I had a better idea of how the associated fleet vessels could contribute best.

Stellaris is made to be significantly more accessible than the other Paradox games. If you've played any major 4X in the last several decades to any reasonable extent, you should be fine to at least wade into the shallow end of the pool. I didn't have any trouble picking it up and my only experience going into it were 4X games(as opposed to grand strategy like CK/EU).

You know, CK2 isn't really all that complicated.

There's even a Newbie Island and everything!

And notifications to explain everything that's going on.

Xcom2 update. I've killed the Archon Ruler! Hopefully, that's the last ruler, those things are nasty! Slow but steady progress. It brings out the OCD in me when I can't do all the available missions/events :/

The AI has some use, they just aren't smart. You have to really look at the equipment they have and decide how to use them. If they all have torpedoes, but the enemy has a lot of point defense, you won't do much damage. They also seem to move REALLY slowly, so if they have short range weapons, they won't get much done. They are pretty good meat shields though, so if you give them stuff like shields and repair drones, they can soak up a lot that would be otherwise sent your way.

Your interceptor is a bit OP because you can get inside the shields of the enemy capitals and hit hull directly. You can also switch between weapons to use whatever is most appropriate.

Yeah I think I'm going to just focus on getting them the longest range weapons and beefing them up so they distract people longer.

I tried to make them more effective with the speed upgrade and the hull damage upgrade but it just doesn't function. Three destroyers with +hull damage seem to kill one unshielded destroyer slightly slower than my damned autocannon.

My wife and I played through The Bunker last night. It's a fairly well told creepy story about a lone survivor in a nuclear shelter and the stuff that happened to get him to the lone state. It's pretty much just a short film with some clicking here and there. It's not super interactive. But we enjoyed watching it. Thanks to @PierceNeck for the gift. I will say things go a bit off the rails near the end. There's a mind boggling design decision to put a fairly difficult QTE right there near the end. Like most of the game is click this circle and drag it to the right to open this cabinet. Every once in a while there will be a timed QTE which isn't too tough you just need to click the right spot once. Then the more irritating ones are the click a bunch real fast to fill up a fast draining meter. Maybe it would have been easier on a controller, but it seemed more like a mouse game. But still all super easy.

Then at the end there's a one of those click real fast jobs, that's also on a very short timer. I missed it the first time, and it game overed, and rewound about 7 minutes earlier. I thought maybe I just hadn't been paying attention enough. Get back to the spot again, start clicking away, nope failed it again. Let's start the scene all over again, just suck the momentum right out of this plot. Got it on the the third attempt by positioning the mouse in a way so that I could rapid fire the mouse button at an angle. Such a bizarre design choice. And to have it reset back so far. It's like they suddenly decided their lightly interactive game/film wasn't hard enough so they threw in a tough one at the end when the story is essentially climaxing.

Nobody talking about the Gabe Newell AMA?

    TLDR:
Still explicitly being cagey about HL3 and the veracity of the leak reporting that it's dead.

    Holy shit!
Why even have an AMA. They don't have anything to really talk about right now.

    I know!
It's to make the fanboys froth and guess and spin conjecture so Valve can pretend to be something more than a storefront cashing in on other people's digital goods for a bit longer.
    Too harsh?

Maybe a little; they did launch their VR stuff last year after all.

Well yeah, I was mainly just being pissy. I mean, they also have the Steam Controller, which I will sing praises to until the heat-death of the universe, and their other hardware.

I was mainly just ribbing them for not releasing a game in . . . how many years now?

This isn't a spoiler because the DLC page and the mission that introduces them points this out in big capital letters so:

There are three alien rulers. Viper, Berserker, and Archon.
