I've never had much luck cloning primary OS drives and nearly always do a reinstall because of the headaches it has always caused. Even when I get it working, it doesn't work as well as I'd prefer and a reinstall of an OS is like 20 minutes + updates.
Well it depends on the type of recovery software you got with the laptop. If it's just a restore partition it may be more complicated.
But like dispatch.o mentioned, please wipe the new drive and start fresh. It's going to be a lot more stable that way.
