Models and textures made for a 3DS game can just be copy-pasted into a Switch game and everything will magically look and function fine. Video games are very easy to make, according to these people who don't make video games.
Yeah it's a tradeoff, it a tradeoff between carrying dead weight forever or giving Gamefreak the freedom to breathe and devout resources to all kinds of new stuff, NOT JUST FOR SWSH, BUT FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES MOVING FORWARD.
SWSH is the time when they're going to move the entire thing to a completely new and much higher res platform. Previous transitions were not nearly as radical in terms of hardware architecture. And SWSH already brings a bunch of new paradigms to the table. I'd bet the games after SWSH will get the chance of evolving a lot more radically.
I mean no one even knows if any of their favorites will be cut yet. And GF said that it doesn't mean pokemon absent from SWSH won't ever bee seen again.
I get that it stings, I'm sure I'll miss some pokemon or other when the game is out... But seriously, we only got to move pokemon over to SM/USUM a few months after they were out (and most of us had already completed the game). Then I brought my full living dex over and they... were just there, not really doing much.
I'd love a pokemon farm thing where I could go to see my full dex in glorious 3D moving about, and then play the individual games with a select few (and a different selection for each game gen)

I played Gen V for over a year straight and that was becuase I loved breeding, raising and fighting with an insane variety of pokemon and team combinations.
So I wouldn't say your experience speaks for everyone. The sheer amount of pokes and the growing diversity of them has always been a big part of the appeal for me as we watch the world get bigger with each game.
I would rather see GF come to a different solution than this still. With as much money as Pokemon makes for them, I have a hard time believing they couldn't find more people or teams to help manage the growing roster.

Slurpuff was my favorite Gen VI pokemon by far.
As happy as I am to see another sweet food fairy pokemon (cousin of Swirlix line maybe?), not sure how I feel about the thought of constantly struggling with whether or not to eat my precious cake baby.

Hmm. So the special model big boys are only very spefic ones you get from the raid things or maybe/probably one or two from story stuff.
The raid things aren't just post game right?
Because that would be disappointing. But if I can go hunt out a big boy or two mid-game I'd be OK with that even if it does seem a bit restrictive. But then again makes them feel a bit more special. But then once again it being a dumb multiplayer only thing sucks because I really have 0 interest in playing pokemon alongside some strangers. I was totally going to avoid those raid fights entirely until I saw this.

"Yamper’s Ability, Ball Fetch, is a new Ability that comes into play when the Trainer throws a Poké Ball at a wild Pokémon but fails to catch it. If Yamper isn’t holding an item, it will fetch the first Poké Ball that failed to catch the Pokémon, regardless of what type of Poké Ball it is."

There's apparently NPCs that help you in offline raid battles, so that'll be a thing at least. Who knows what their AI will be like, though, beyond "let the player be the one to Dynamax".
Also, I'm 100% certain that we'll get a gigantomax-able version legendary because not having that be a thing would be baffling.
Models and textures made for a 3DS game can just be copy-pasted into a Switch game and everything will magically look and function fine. Video games are very easy to make, according to these people who don't make video games.
To be fair, that's literally how they've been designing the Pokemon games since X & Y. Including Let's Go and this one which re-use the X & Y models and animation rigs again. The big difference is the Switch ones need new texture work since 3DS looks like butts by comparison (They may have upped the poly count on the models? But I kinda doubt it). I think the biggest sticking point here is having to redo more than just 151 textures (i.e. 800ish textures is crazy a lot) and that I believe they might be trying to add additional animations this time as well. That's a ton of work so I sort of get it.
That said.... it's weird to say "never" when you could promise a future National Dex (just as an example, Sun & Moon did not launch with Pokemon Bank support - that took several months... so it effectively did not have a National Dex at launch). They'll have to update these Pokemon *eventually* and every one they do is building up their tool kit again. I'm just surprised they aren't doing what they did with X & Y - eating the extra dev cost so they can reuse the assets for like the next 20 years or something (really there's not a whole lot more room to go up from here now that we're in the HD era.. future improvements would probably be on the animation side).
So I dunno. But I have a feeling the next game will have the National Dex just based on how much this move pissed people off (it's honestly probably too late for Sword and Shield at this point).
Edit: Not sure if this has been linked here before but I discovered it over the weekend and it is super interesting and relates back to this topic: https://youtu.be/A-pmh70cZu4
Im thinking theyre cutting the number of pokemon to resuce the amount of modeling and texturing for the new game. They want to make sure they can release a new pokemon game in a reasonable timeframe. The Lets Go games were just to hold people over. They dont want to be like smash wiiu coming out 3 years after the console. I bet they release a few games pretty quick (maybe yearly) and rotate through the rest of the art. Then theyll drop the super pokemon colosseum 3 switch road to glory version that can import pokemon from all the games.
But until then, having a more limited pool kind of gives them a chance to have their battle tournaments in a format more like standard in mtg than legacy like theyve been doing.
I wonder how many gym leaders will be version exclusives like Bea and Allister are. My gut says there'll be two sets, but I'm willing to go as high as four.

Now that the leak has turned out to be true, the thing I'm anxious to see the most aside from a potential Farfetch'd evolution is the seagull that keeps a pikachu in its mouth and uses it as a weapon.
"Hey you! Yeah, you! Fuck you!"

Of all the Generic Fish Pokemon, they are the best and most interesting by a fair margin...so I will absolutely miss them! Especially if Goldeen/Seaking etc. get in above them.
Is anyone really going to miss Finneon and Lumineon?
how many times do I gotta remind people that Lumineon has 3 base stats of 69
Still don't care!
But in all seriousness, every gen has a new Rattata, a new Pidgey, and a bunch of new fish and plants that nobody will miss. The padding Pokemon that are there to fill out a dex and serve as early game leveling trash.
If they kept the Pidgey line and the Fletchling line, and get rid of all of the other generic filler trash bird lines and nobody would care. Likewise, they can trim about 80% of the plant types, keeping a few of the memorable ones and iconic ones, and trim the rest, and nobody would be sad about it.
I think they could even trim some fat from the original 151. As someone else pointed out, Jynx is ripe for being culled. You could also get rid of Paras, Shellder, and a few others, and nobody would miss them.
I guarantee there’s people out there that love any given ‘mon you think sucks. They are all a stat boost and new ability away from being viable.
I’ve just done a quick google and Cloyster is tied with Mega Slowbro for the highest base Defense stat of all Water-type Pokémon. Thanks Shellder.
Edit:
I hate Trubbish, but I get that someone wants a gross thing. I could flip a coin on Jigglypuff and Clefairy, but someone else knows the difference. The only ones I’d say you could get rid of personally are the Mew-likes. They’re boring.

Actually this though. It's just a fish, sure, but it's a cool looking fish and I like it.

Feebas is my favorite fish. Relicanth a close second.
I would include Wishiwashi but its more BEAST than fish.
If they just readjusted the stat spreads for a bunch of pokemon and/or played with the type chart, they could make a whole lot of forgettable pokemon relevant.
Every pokémon has its fans so that argument about not missing them is silly.
But also because they aren't being removed from the world of pokémon, they just won't be appearing in every game. Anything left out this time around is going to be more likely to show up next time.

Milotic is straight dope and one of my favorite water-types, so Feebas totally gets a pass.
Keep in mind when you're talking about cuts, you're also talking about cutting any evolutions, or in some cases symbiote Pokemon (need Remoraid if you have Mantine, for example). So it's tougher to make cuts than you'd think.

You can't get rid of Trubbish! He's a literal bag of garbage! That is too hilarious to not have in every game...
all pokemon have at least one fan, but not all pokemon have a significant number of fans.
And they're all being rotated in and out at some point.
~950 pokemon is way too much to include in every game. The series is not ending anytime soon, and in the last ten years or so the dex almost doubled in size. ten years from now it should be about 1300-1400 pokemon.
it's time they started trimming the fat
I'm playing Pokemon Let's Go Eevee tonight. I'm pretty early in the game, and I just found the tunnel with the guard guy in it that won't let you pass. In original Red/Blue the guy asks for Lemonade, right? In Eevee he asked for Tea, and I was kind of surprised by that. I don't remember the tunnel guard wanting tea before. Of course, I'm old and Pokemon Red/Blue are like a million years old so maybe I just have a faulty memory.

Yamper confirmed to be the goodest of boys.
That new fighting gym leader's outfit seems to be suggesting that Scorbunny is going to be another fire/fighting type
Except Jynx. They are 100% going to retire Jynx.

Leaks had it as pure fighting, probably a typo on pure fire but it would be kind of wild either way.
