JRPG Thread: Suikoden is fun to say.

JURPS! We all play em, we all love em! We all love poking fun at them!
Lots of stuff is on the horizon for Jurp land. Dragon Quest 8's 3DS port is coming on the 20th. Kingdom Hearts 2.8 is out on the 24th. Nier Automata is out next month, and Persona 5 is finally getting an english release in April or something (probably, maybe).
JRPGs are good, and fun, and often dumb in the best way. Let's talk about em!
does granblue actually have a plot? I was under the impression it was just a gatchapon game with sexy character art.
I just finished what could be considered the first major story arc a few nights back, which capped off against an incredible endurance match against a boss that took like fifty turns to beat, transformed multiple times during the fight, and by the end I think we were fighting in space and it was throwing meteors at me?

Also toward the second half of the first "act", (up through chapter 63) I kinda like where the story goes and what happens with some of the characters.

So, looking back, there were a lot of good releases in 2016, almost enough to make it "the year of the JURP."
Did you have a favorite?

I guess TMS#FE?
That statement really made me think "Wait, were there really a lot of JRPG releases?"
when i played skies of arcadia as a kid i was super afraid of approaching sky rifts, or breaking the ceiling or floor of the sky. even today thinking about it makes me seize up a little in fright. why is this jrpg thread

I've got some real conflicted feelings about FFXV, and while early on I would have classified it as kind of a mess and not really good in any particular area but "better than the sum of its parts", over time I think my opinion slowly shifted to "actually just pretty much exactly the sum of its parts"
does anyone remember that tech demo presentation square enix did regarding like, controlling a cat or something in FFXV? did that turn out to be anything in the real game?
Started a playthrough of X last weekend.
I didn't mind my first several times through, but man is it improved by being able to turn off random battles (or turn them way up for capturing).
I turned them off about halfway through the forest in Kilika, and mostly left them off, and didn't really feel behind the power curve until around the Calm Lands, thanks to so many mandatory battles.
For a few characters anyway. Wakka doesn't really bloom strengthwise until latish, and most of my strength spheres (first Blitzball game + okay maybe I did the lightning dodging while I was there since battles were off already...) went to the intersections of Tidus and Auron's paths (with Kimahri following Tidus after a detour to grab Steal and Use). Accidentally forgot to drop a strength sphere on Yuna's so my summons are actually not carrying me like they usually do. It's been a while since the story bosses have challenged me. It's nice.
+1

I finished Bravely Second about a month ago.
It was pretty good. But it definitely lost me towards the end. I like the way the Bravely games handle the combat and I love the job system, but the story was disjointed, and the gameplay was super repetitive during the last act. I probably shouldn't have bothered getting all the jobs.
My weapon grid is starting to flesh out, and now I'm trying to decide where the biggest focus should be.
Currently running:
3 SSR Ygg swords at SL3
1 SSR Ygg Bow
Nemone's Axe at 1*
Mahira's bow
Cagliostro's staff at 1*
Ayer's Fist
SR Ygg Fist and SR Motor Beak from the last event both at MLB
I know the short term answer is farm for more Ygg swords and the 40% earth summon. I'm trying to get either a Bahamut sword or dagger, and it's going to be a while before I get Normal or Unknown weapons. I still don't feel like I do very much damage. I know part of that is the lack of a core summon (I'm using Allosaurus) so I'm planning on dumping a lot of elixirs into Vohu the next time she's up. Aside from replacing the SR weapons, though, I'm not sure what the best immediate upgrades are. I have an extra bow and 2 SSR daggers right now, but aside from possibly the bow for Enmity, I think the current weapon skills I have in place are better.
I'm kind of torn on exactly how much Enmity I'll want to make use of Ayer, too.

Vohu is next up on the showdown cycle in a little over two days, so definitely try and get in there and get at least one copy of that summon.
That said, three Ygg Swords actually puts you within throwing distance of using Yggdrasil Omega as your main summon. Once you get maybe one more sword, and raise all of them to at least a combined 20 skill levels, Yggdrasil Omega should outpace a 40% Vohu summon. The idea being that as soon as your combined magna weapon skills are worth 40% attack or more, the +100% from Yggdrasil Omega will be worth using.
Still hoping that one of these years Sakura Taisen 1-4 will get English translation ports. Yeah, they released 5 in English to the Wii years ago, then panicked when that didn't sell more than five or six copies and never bothered thinking about it again.

Fates was probably my favorite.
Yeah, the story was terrible but I liked almost everything else about the game and I probably logged over 200 hours total.
I also really liked the Odin Sphere remake.
FFXV I'm iffy on as I like a lot of what's there but you can tell a lot is also missing and the warts are pretty obvious once the novelty wears off.
Moon is pokemon of course.
Sophie was an Atelier game but you could tell its a new one for a new system.
And I didn't really play Apocalypse or Sessions even though I want to.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will come out on the PS6 in 2028
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
You'd think they'd have learned their lesson after ff15.

First, we’re releasing Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue in January, then exhibiting a Final Fantasy VII snow sculpture at the Sapporo Snow Festival in February
This sentence tickles me.
"we have some important stuff to get to first. KH2.8 needs to come out before KH3. And we have this rad snow sculpture that is our priority before FF7R."

It does have a story to it, yes.
But the main story also has bonus missions featuring side characters that are fun
Thanks to that gun drop the other night, my Light grid pulled a little ahead of my Fire grid.
I now deal about 20k damage a hit to neutral elements, and 24k to Dark.

Two Final Fantasies and a Pokemon, for starters.
XV was the best because it's the only one I actually started playing
Trails of Cold Steel II hands down.
Runner up is a tie between World of Final Fantasy and Rance VI.
Final Fantasy XV cycles between a 11/10 game and a 5/10 game.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, Stranger of Sword City, and Megadimension Neptunia VII get honorable mentions.
I've yet to play Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse but I hear it's wonderful.
Exist Archive gets my ambitious and good but held down by low budget award.
Atelier Sophie is sadly not as good as previous Ateliers. Still cute though.
// Switch: SW-5306-0651-6424 //
Fire Emblem Fates, TMS, Pokemon Moon
For me it gets dragged down by everytbing else, especially the plot.

I have three of those SR Earth fist weapons up to one star now. I guess that's good.
I think I was going to ask if I should bother using any of the Earth weapons from that last collab? They didn't seem like anything.
If you're talking about the Idolmaster collab, the SSR Earth Axe from that event is one of the absolute best Earth weapons in the game, currently.
EDIT: Oh hey, new info dropped today.
Trust character for the SamSho collab is Wind SR Haohmaru, item exchange character is Light SR Nakoruku
Next 5* SR is Rock Howard Feather
No, the racing thing. I think I got the SSR bow and a few Motor Beaks? I feel like there was one more, a gauntlet?
And they picked the most boring choices possible from that series. No Galford?
I would have preferred Ukyo and Galford, but hey
And yeah, the event weapons from Platinum Sky are not great
The bow isn't the worst thing in the world if you get it to 3*, but prior to that it's bad
