I think similar thoughts whenever I see crew in Next Generation wearing season 1/2 uniforms in season 3 or later.

So in Babylon 5 Season 3 when the command crew get new uniforms I can't help but always think of the rest of the Babylon 5 staff who are like, "whoa dudes, you get those rad jackets and we just get a dress shirt with a patch? Lame as hell."

Those new uniforms are pretty spiffy though. I also really like the idea that they didn't even need to order them, someone just had these uniforms lying around just in case they broke ties with Earth.

I have a podcast about Digimon called the Digital Moncast, on Audio Entropy.

You would know what it is without googling had you read the Sandman comic.

On topic - Young Pope is really giving me a contender for the most despicable character on TV. I think all the people who only saw the memes and expect some sort of satire with Jude Law as a hip Pope bickering with stuffy Vatican priests are going to get a nasty surprise.

Hey, I'm almost done with season one of Supergirl and I think it's largely better than I was led to believe. I just watched World's Finest and it was very good, buuuuuuut also I was seeing a lot of "it's way better than the show normally is!" when it aired and I don't think it was that dramatic of a jump in quality, if it was a jump in quality at all? I've got like, two episodes left of this season before I...figure out how to catch up with the new season, and I've heard good things, so that's...fun!

(still probably not dipping into the other CW DC shows tho, I've seen just enough to be reasonably certain they're not my thing)

  • LorahaloLorahalo Registered User regular
I'd still check out the crossover episodes, because they're just fun to watch. It's neat to see them all in one place.

I have a podcast about Digimon called the Digital Moncast, on Audio Entropy.

I guess I'm gonna watch it now.

well I think part of what makes watching Supergirl an easier sell is that it is on a whole other earth so, like...probably not gonna be a ton of major things happening in those crossovers that will impact the ongoing stuff on Supergirl outside of...the Supergirl episode in question

Riverdale originally was pitched as a movie, he said, and they thought they had a deal, until one exec, who he declined to name, called a meeting and strongly urged them to add time travel, or portals because “portals are huge,” or cast Louis CK as Archie – which even Aguirre-Sacasa said left him “gobsmacked.” Eventually teaming with Greg Berlanti to develop as a TV series, he was told, “you’re going to need a dead body.”

I've heard the book of The Magicians was really bad and misogynistic.

Does the show address that at all?

I have a lot of really good things to say about Supergirl but I think one of them definitely isn't about how good of a performance Dean Cain is giving, because I just watched a flashback episode that prominently featured him and he did a...bad job

Melissa Benoist is as well-cast as Supergirl as Henry Cavill was for Superman

It's a shame only one of them ever got a good writer(s) involved in their role

there's also a big undercurrent of "characters fighting to get out from under the shadow of other characters" that comes up over and over and I really appreciate how they've taken a bunch of characters that could easily be seen as like, "well, nobody else is using Lucy Lane," and turned it into a real strength of the show, like...it would be very easy to go "fuck, of course they got a lady lex luthor as a bad guy on this show," but they definitely don't seem to have taken the easy way out there, either, based on what I've seen of season two stuff

I would disagree that it's that bad or really misogynistic, but I do think the show does a better job of showing the female characters' points of view.

It's important to remember that it's a TV show written by cisgender writers based around a trans woman character played by a cisgender man.

So while it might be technically "good", that's a pretty blatantly shaky foundation to start with.

I'm glad that it exists because it's definitely a landmark show, but I had to stop watching it after first season because I think 90% of characters are unlikable.

Haven't seen the episode yet, but
They have a ton of plots juggling, so it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't have the TIME for a big battle scene. It's not like they haven't done murderfests before... like, the first Paris episode was an hour straight of death and destruction.

I haven't watched Transparent, but I loved Tambor's emmy speech about how his hope is that in the future trans actors will be playing those parts instead of him. Clearly the show is trying to do good things, and I think criticizing it for not being written by all trans people is probably doing a huge disservice to it. There probably aren't enough talented TV writers who are trans to fill a TV writer's room. I think people forget how tiny a minority trans people are.

Also, I have no interest in watching Supergirl as I'm only a little interested in comic book media in general, but I just realized we're going to have to give it a shot. My oldest daughter (almost 4) keeps talking about how she wants to watch Superman after we had on Batman vs. Superman (didn't even make it through the whole thing, man that movie is bad), so if Supergirl is actually decent maybe she will like that.

Supergirl is supposedly a very nice and hopeful little show that is basically everything that the Superman movies should have been.

Relevant Supergirl Season 1 super minor spoiler
There is a scene where a little girl is being harassed for wearing a Supergirl logo shirt. Supergirl flies down, uses her x-ray vision to read the girl's name from school papers in her backpack, then addresses the her personally as a friend, making the bullies realize how wrong they were.

That's the kind of show this is.

Yup, and then Superman actually cameos for a few episodes in S2 and he's everything Henry Cavill should have been allowed to be.
