There's no joke option Larlar because it's old hat now and I am all about keeping up with the cool kids, which is why I made a thread about a 47-year-old song!
You would think so but I've met a lot of people who think the unplugged one is clearly better and I don't get it, and I am hoping someone can explain it to me

This is clearly a trap.

The original.
By far.
That sick riff.

The Unplugged Version
The original version played, no joke, at least two or three times a day at the grocery store where I worked five days a week. Therefore, I have nothing to associate with it but misery and stress.
I'd rather not listen to the unplugged version if I had a choice, though. I just don't like the song at all.

Yeah as far as I'm concerned the decision comes down to "which version has a brain-melting guitar riff"
The original has the sick riff.
The unplugged has much, much better singing.

The Unplugged Version
The original has some cool guitars
But honestly, if I want to listen to some sweet guitar riffs, I'm probably going to listen to someone other than Eric Clapton
Ain't my style
And the unplugged version is a much more pleasant song in every other respect

Look, if I am listening to Layla it's because of the guitar riff. It's so memorable, so awesome, and it gets repeated in the song a lot.
But you take out that riff, and the unplugged version is about a hundred times better.

This is like "what dessert do you want, pie or cake?" Like, they're both great, but 80% of the time I'm gonna pick pie. Still, there's those times when I want something different and I'm glad I have cake too.

I fundamentally don't think the chorus works unplugged. It's a decent arrangement, but if you didn't know it was a cover of a famous song it's just a song that doesn't really work
They're almost 2 completely distinct songs. Like... they don't even feel like the same stuff, done in a different way. It's practically a cover... just covered by the same guy.

Yeah, that's a good point. I like it as an acoustic take on Layla but it doesn't really feel definitive. It's very much tied to the original.
I've got to give credit that Clapton (a notoriously lazy guitar player) took an acoustic cover (a notoriously lazy form of arrangement) and spent a lot of time trying to make it work. Typically an acoustic cover is literally the exact same thing played on a different type of guitar, leaving aside the fact that a lot of great electric stuff sounds fucking horrible on acoustic.

It doesn't feel definitive because it doesn't have that sick riff.
But the singing is so much cleaner.

The Unplugged Version
I'm pretty sure I heard the acoustic one way more as a kid
Like I guess my dad really likes it probably
So if you asked me to think of the song Layla, that's the one I'd come up with in my brain
It honestly took me listening to them both for this poll to realize that they were the same song
Edit: Which is to say, as the thought kind of got away from me, I consider the acoustic one the definitive version
Clearly that's not the case for a lot of you, but I think there might be some bias of having heard one first to make it the definitive one

I think that's pretty reductive. The riff is good, but there's so much more to the song than one riff and while the acoustic version does a good job translating all of it, it definitely feels like a lesser version that is more interesting for the novelty of it than for the sum of its parts.
