I'm trying to use items in the environment but almost always you have to turn away from a dude to pick them up and the auto-attack thus swings that bike at just the closest wall
In beast mode you don't have to face items. Just being near something and hitting square will pick it up and swing it in the direction you're facing
Otherwise, you can't really fuck around when there's 3 guys on you. Use triangle enders to knock fools down, then you have an opportunity to grab a dude, or walk over and grab a garbage can, or take out your nunchuks, or switch styles, w/e.
I've lost to shakedown three times so far which has been about 25% of the time. Most of the times I was careless and once I got hit by his yellow heat move near to killing him. That hurts.

He gets slot car racing instead, but you can buy the weapons you unlock in crafting

Okay, I've gotten to like, chapter four or five or so
And Majima's story is way more compelling than Kiryu's so far
Not to say I don't care about Kiryu, because he rules, but like... everything going on in Majima's head is just more interesting from a character perspective
I'm really liking how goddamned gross they make wealth feel
Every open display of greed or excess is just so off-putting

100% of Kiryu's personality is Do Right By Kazama.
Even in the other games, almost every last thing he does comes down to that. Even when it seems like he's Doing Right By Sunshine Orphanage, or Doing Right By Haruka, both of those come down to Kazama.
Majima on the other hand is all over the damn place. Depending on the game he's comic relief, a psychotic liability, a master strategist, a whiny weasel, or some combination of the above. Majima in 0 is a fantastic character, but I'm having a really hard time believing it's the same cat from the rest of the series.
Are any of the other games period pieces like this one is?
I was under the impression that they were all pretty much set in the year they came out, in which case, it'd be like 20 years later even by the first game, plenty of time for someone to kinda shift how they act

Yea the other games were all modern for when they were released.

Kiryu is 48 by the time Yakuza 6 rolls around.
And it's nice having a badass older protagonist with history.

We'd seen pre-0 Majima in 5, and he was more in line with 'modern' Majima.
Don't get me wrong, so far I think the 0 incarnation is by far the most interesting and nuanced iteration of the character.
I don't think I would have enjoyed 40 hours of psycho in a bowl cut and snakeskin jacket.
My interpretation is that the "Mad Dog of Shimano" persona is as much of an act as "Sotenbori's Lord of the Night", just easier for Majima to keep up, especially since we get his internal monologue as a protagonist.

I think the Mad Dog is less of an act and more of a "I've stopped giving a shit" sort of thing
Same difference. Bottom line he was never really a psycho, just found it convenient for his bosses and subordinates to think he was. All the better to conceal his true motive "do right by Saejima".
By the by anyone seen Yakuza 6? Because that is rapidly becoming my most anticipated game eclipsing Persona 5 and Zelda I mean damn.

I've heard Yakuza 6 is short and missing tons of series staples. Far less minigames, heat actions, combat moves, I believe it doesn't have equippable weapons.
I'm still gonna get it day 1, but a lot of folks are saying it's very, very light.
Makes sense everything I've seen paints it as the definitive conclusion of Kiryu's story. I can appreciate the switch to more tightly focused experience, especially after massively expanding the scope in 5 to the whole country.

you don't even use the bar stool, you just chuck it straight up in the air and punch the guy
He obliterated you in two hits
He's getting lots of HP now.

This is a lot
Does Kiryu get an equivalent place?

I am so glad they made him playable in this

He just kinda seems like Standard Stoic Badass Game Protagonist
He only gets a personality in the sidequests, and it seems to vanish for the main story
I kinda LOVE that Kiryu barely has personality

I will not be beaten you damn computer!!
A lot of the minigames were only fun once, and I'm already getting kinda tired of the combat
Doesn't seem to be any crafting there initially, but you can buy and repair weapons.
How quickly/easily do you get access to Out Run in this game?
I know it's dumb, but finding out that game is in this one shifted me from 'I'll get it at some point' to buying it 5 minutes later.
Just ignore your objective and run to the arcade like a true yakuza.
