Rift exclusives exist because apparently Facebook moneyhatted like crazy
Valve and Oculus were working together initially, but the relationship broke down because Oculus wanted their own storefront. Which makes sense. There's not a lot of money in hardware, especially with something like this. Profit comes in software and licensing sales. Valve said no, release on Steam, because Valve wants their 30%. Oculus refused, Valve said "Hey world, introducing the Vive!"
Facebook's money allowed Oculus to finish developing the Rift and the storefront without Valve.

Anyone try the new battle royale mode in Rec Room? I played a couple rounds of it earlier. It's pretty fun. I've actually never played a single game of Fortnite or Battlegrounds, so the whole concept is still pretty fresh to me. I'm sure I'll come back to it. Only issue right now is that about two-thirds of the time when I tried to play, the lobby was bugged out and wouldn't actually start the game. Hopefully that'll get worked out soon.

My kid (10 years old) been playing it a bunch on and off this weekend and loves it. He's pretty consistent in coming in 3rd, 4th, or 5th. Hasn't won a match, though.

I've had Dreadhalls since, well, a long time, but it just sat not being played. I finally decided to give it a try yesterday. I'm not generally a fan of horror games, and I knew VR horror was not going to be my thing, but I bought it, I should play it.
It was all very creepy and atmospheric and then I discovered the first real "monster", a big giant rat looking thing and noped out.
VR horror is absolutely not for me.

Skyrim is borderline VR horror for me. I'm only a few hours in and facing down Giant Spiders and glowy eyed skeleton/mummies, and freaking huge dragons has had me genuinely freaked out.
I know I am way, way late to this party but I tried Moss for the first time last night. I can’t say I felt such a sense of just pure joy that this game invokes in a long time. Quill is instantly lovable and the way this game presents everything to you is just breathtaking. It took about 10 seconds for me to be like “yup, his little mouse is my new best friend.” and feel actual dread when she was in danger. If you haven’t played it and you have a PSVR, drop what you are doing and play it now.
That's awesome. My close friend works for Polyarc and did 100% of the animations in the game. If you wanna send any special messages, critiques, or praise his way, let me know. That goes for everyone here too. He's always looking to improve...even after almost 20 years in the industry.
@MNC Dover Well let him know that the animation for Quill 100% sells this game as a living, breathing world. It's incredible, as she acts exactly how Disney movies have told me an anthropomorphic mouse should. The way she will give little contextual hints when I'm parsing a puzzle is both helpful and hilarious most times. When she pointed at an enemy that can shoot, and pointed at another spot in the room and went "pew pew pew!" I almost died laughing. It's a wonderful game and I hope they are making Moss 2...
Also, I know they shouldn't over do it, but the high five moment is awesome. Need more high fives.
I'm greatly looking forward to Budget Cuts, but it'll have to wait a bit I think till I've finished Robo Recall (I keep getting distracted by Gorn and Beat Saber!).

I picked up Beat Saber today and had, I think, the single longest VR play session I've had yet. I played through the playlist at least 3 times.
It's so good. Good rhythm games just feel joyful all the time and Beat Saber is no exception. After two hours my feet were hurting, I was sweaty and my eyes were starting to strain and I kept telling myself I needed to stop but I just kept playing the next track.
I need more tracks....

I've started trying expert difficulty and now I'm sweating for reeeeeeeal
Considering how important frame rate is for VR, it's a little concerning that they didn't think about optimization before now.
To be fair, it doesn't sound to me like they didn't consider it -- more that they didn't anticipate how difficult it would be and how long it would end up taking them. A minor distinction but I'm more forgiving of the latter.
I pulled the trigger with my tax refund. Ordered the PSVR from Costco (because of their sweet return policy in case it doesn't work out). Got the Skyrim edition because I really feel the need to test myself going to that awesome swan dive at whatever high-up outpost that is . . .
Should be here in roughly a week. Once I get all set up, what are some must-haves?

Grats!
I think Skyrim is a make-or-break first game to play in VR. It's super complicated. When I have someone over to try VR for the first time, I usually start them off with a simple shooter, and also something that won't potentially make them nauseous.
Some games I'd recommend that I personally own include Moss, Super Hot, WipEout Omega Collection, Resident Evil 7, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Farpoint, Statik, Playroom VR (free), VR Worlds, etc. There are a ton more, but those are a pretty good variety that should help you decide what kind of VR games you might like.
I would love to have a built in window view, so you could see Twitch chat, or hell, even watch a stream, while playing something
Can't you already to this in Oculus Home? Just pin a window wherever you want and play away. I'm almost positive I've heard people using this to watch Netflix and stuff while bumming around in Elite Dangerous and whatnot.
Yeah, that's the best solution I've found, but iirc it can only copy from the buffer of an existing monitor. I couldn't get it to copy from an inactive window. I.e., I want to run display mirroring on the desktop for IRL couch spectators, but display chat in-game.
For people who play from a desk with multiple monitors, it's great.

He's been working on a ground-up rewrite for the last year or so that I think solves this problem.
He is actually pretty active the the steam discussions for it and talks about it a lot. It seems like it is in late beta and will be released sometime this year, but he is just one guy with limited testing resources, so grains of salt?

I actually corresponded with him about this for a bit, and he suggested I try one of his free (and abandoned) predecessor projects for my particular use case.
He seems pretty chill, and I will be happy to kick some money his way for it
I mean. I'm coming from a background where I've been lucky enough to have a pretty good computer, and each of the major consoles for the last couple generations. I got to play everything.
So now I feel super entitled to be able to play everything.
But getting another VR headset is a very different prospect than just getting another console. (This statement could probably use some unpacking as well, but that's a post on its own.)
So PSVR stuff is like the first stuff that I've been unable to play, and on some levels it feels like an almost personal affront.
That is a shitty, entitled, first-world reaction, but it is genuine.
So while I am conscious and working on that, I still feel bad and want to play Moss and that puzzle game where your hands go in the box.
It's okay. I feel the same way but in the other direction. I have the PSVR and a pretty decent gaming machine. Can I justify having two VR headsets in my house? No, not really. Have I tried to because there are a few PC VR games that I really want? Yes I have. But I'd also probably have to set it up in the master bedroom of my house and that's not likely to be acceptable by the other inhabitant. So you're not the only one that's a bit bothered by not being able to play certain VR games.
And then I play, like, three games a year or something because I don't have the time to use them both.
My daughter is totally digging Job Simulator though, she's only just 5 and getting the hang of the chef mode. She found it hilarious that she cracked an egg on the floor and was still able to serve it. Also eating stuff is equally hilarious.
(Slight responsible adult disclaimer: She's limited to ten minutes a day at most)
(Slightly less responsible adult disclaimer: That ten minutes CAN include Gorn [with blood off]...)

My six-year-old is a solid gamer but hasn't tried VR yet. He's seen the headset but has never seen anyone use it and hasn't asked about it, so I'm keeping the magic a secret for now. I'm simultaneously dying to introduce him to it (because I know it'll blow his mind) and relieved he doesn't know anything about it yet (because I'm doing all I can to encourage outdoor / non-sitting-in-chair play).
One day though, it's going to be awesome. I'll definitely want to make a video of it.

I appreciate the dev's detailed explanation and apology, but man, I'm disappointed.
